About the Team

Technical Services at UTS support teaching, research, and operational excellence across disciplines. Dedicated technical teams manage laboratories, fieldwork logistics, and specialist facilities, while overseeing procurement, asset management, and compliance with safety protocols. Within the Faculty of Science, Technical Services provides dedicated support for teaching and research laboratories, fieldwork operations, and specialist facilities. Teams support safe and reliable scientific activity through local operational readiness, equipment support and adherence to University Work Health & Safety requirements.

About the Role

The Technical Services Officer supports the operation of Biosciences laboratories within the Faculty of Science, enabling safe, efficient environments for teaching, research and external engagement through hands‑on technical support, facility and equipment readiness, and compliance with laboratory safety requirements.

Role responsibilities include:





- Support practical teaching activities through laboratory and teaching space preparation, in‑class technical assistance, and pack‑down in line with local procedures.
- Provide technical support for research and facility operations, including equipment set‑up, routine checks and troubleshooting within scope.
- Maintain operational readiness of standard and specialised equipment through routine maintenance activities and coordination of servicing and repairs as directed.
- Manage consumables, materials and fieldwork stores through routine procurement and stock control processes.
- Follow and promote work health and safety practices, supporting risk assessments, inspections and corrective actions within delegated authority.
- Work collaboratively with academic, professional and technical staff, students, contractors and suppliers to support teaching, research and operational activities.

About You

Skills, attributes and knowledge

- Explicit written and verbal communication skills suited to a technical and educational environment.
- Ability to work independently on delegated tasks and collaboratively within a technical team.
- Robust planning and prioritisation skills in busy, changing operational settings.
- Practical problem‑solving skills with sound judgment in escalating non‑routine issues.
- Attention to detail in technical work, safety documentation and local records.




- Knowledge of laboratory and/or field‑based procedures, equipment and WHS requirements relevant to the discipline area.

Experience

- Experience providing technical support in laboratory and/or field environments for teaching and/or research.
- Experience operating, maintaining and checking laboratory or field equipment within scope.
- Experience applying WHS and risk management practices, including SOPs and local records.
- Knowledge of biosciences laboratory practices and, where applicable, local requirements for PC2/BC2 environments and associated biosafety controls.
- Discipline‑relevant experience supporting biosciences, environmental sciences, health/anatomy, or physics, chemistry and forensics activities, as applicable.

Qualifications

- A relevant Degree or Advanced Diploma with subsequent relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

What We Offer

Base Salary Range: $83,906 - $95,989 (HEW5) plus 17% superannuation (pension)

The position is full time and will be made on a continuing basis.
