The Role

The Defence Travel Policy team develops and maintains official travel policy and supports all related activities that support travel undertaken by Australian Public Servants (APS) and Australian Defence Force (ADF) members in the course of their official duties. These policies ensure Defence travel is consistent, efficient, compliant, and aligned with Whole of Government travel arrangements and broader Commonwealth frameworks.

The APS 6 Travel Policy Analyst provides informed and thorough analytical and policy, and advise to guide the continuous improvement of Defence’s travel policies. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the APS 6 leads aspects of policy development, risk identification, stakeholder engagement and team coordination. The role contributes to strategic planning, mentors junior staff, and ensures policy settings remain contemporary, practical, and aligned with operational needs across Defence.

About our Team

The Defence Travel Policy team develops and maintains the official travel policy and supports all related activities for travel undertaken by Australian Public Servants (APS) and Australian Defence Force (ADF) members in the course of their official duties. The travel support infrastructure ensures Defence travel is consistent, efficient, compliant, and aligned with Whole of Government travel arrangements and other Commonwealth framework. The team closely monitors operational requirements, the broader travel environment, and emerging business and compliance risks to ensure policy settings remain contemporary and fit for purpose.

Our Ideal Candidate

- Contribute to the development, review and continuous improvement of travel policy, aligned with legislative and Whole of Government requirements whilst applying sound judgement to interpret policy frameworks and provide clear, evidence-based advice through high quality briefs, reports and recommendations to support decision-making.
- Analyse travel data to identify trends, risks,



cost drivers and compliance issues utilising their analytical skills to support policy refinement and risk mitigation strategies.
- Apply working knowledge of travel systems, processes and workflows to support policy outcomes, contribute to initiatives that integrate system data into policy and process improvements and identifying opportunities to streamline processes and improve efficiency and compliance.
- Engage collaboratively with stakeholders to understand issues, provide clear policy guidance and build productive working relationships to support policy implementation and change.
- Contribute to team planning and delivery of work priorities, aligning with organisational objectives, provide guidance and support to less experienced staff, sharing knowledge and expertise in support of continuous improvement and capability development within the team.
- Highlight their ability to manage competing priorities and deliver quality outcomes under limited direction ensuring integrity, professionalism and accountability is in line with APS and Defence values.

Eligibility

Security Clearance

Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Baseline Vetting” level.
