About the role
This is a fixed-term part-time position (22.5-30 hours per week) until 30 June 2027, with the potential for extension subject to ongoing funding.
The Youth Counsellor will provide early intervention counselling and support services to young people aged 12 – 25 who have or may be at risk of developing a mental health and/or substance use disorder or have economic and social recovery needs.
This position undertakes assessments and triages appropriate referrals to headspace Tuggeranong. The incumbent will assess the mental health and psycho-social support needs of young people referred to headspace and in conjunction with the headspace Tuggeranong team coordinate their transition to appropriate support and treatment streams within and external to headspace in accordance with the clinical need.

Duties
- Provide person-centered support counselling
- Psychoeducation to young people and their families/carers
- Provide individual, evidence-based interventions to family, friends and carers
Skills & Experience
1. Qualifications in Social Work, Mental Health Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Counselling, Psychology,
or other relevant field as well as eligibility for registration with the appropriate professional organisation/authority as required.
2. Experience working within a multidisciplinary team environment, providing counselling in response to the needs of young people.
3. Demonstrated understanding of the health and wellbeing needs of young people with mental health and/or substance use problems.
4. Demonstrated ability to undertake assessment and screening of clients and their carers to determine client care needs and assist clients to access necessary services
