Townsville Hospital and Health Service is seeking an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Worker – Generalist to join the Cultural Assessment and Liaison Team, Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Service in Townsville.

This is an important role for someone who is passionate about supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through culturally safe, respectful and community-informed care.

You will work closely with consumers, families, carers, clinicians and community organisations to help people feel supported, understood and connected throughout their care journey, both in hospital and in community settings.

About the Role

As a valued member of the Cultural Assessment and Liaison Team, you will work across a broad range of service areas within the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Service.

In this role, you will:

- Provide culturally appropriate guidance and support in assessment and treatment planning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs services

- Offer cultural support, advocacy and guidance to consumers, families, carers and key stakeholders

- Support culturally secure care across other Mental Health Service Group clinical teams, where required

- Build and maintain strong working relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations and service partners

- Work collaboratively with service providers and community groups to support health promotion programs, particularly in the area of substance use

- Help strengthen engagement, trust and connection between health services, individuals, families and community

This role plays an important part in improving access, strengthening culturally safe care and supporting better health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

community connection and a genuine commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities.

You will understand the importance of culturally safe care, respectful communication, advocacy and working alongside people in a way that honours their story, family, community and lived experience.

You will be someone who can work collaboratively with clinical teams, community organisations and service partners to support people accessing care through the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Service.

Essential Requirements

Under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community.

Applicants will require one of the following qualifications:

- Certificate III in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health

- Certificate III in Mental Health Peer Work

- Certificate III in Mental Health

- Certificate III in Alcohol and Other Drugs

Applicants who do not currently hold a Certificate III qualification may be appointed at a trainee level, HWF1, on a temporary basis. You will be supported to complete the qualification through a structured training agreement. Upon successful completion, you will progress to a permanent HWF2 position.

Salary and Benefits

Townsville Hospital and Health Service offers a competitive remuneration package, generous leave entitlements and strong support for career development, wellbeing and cultural inclusion.

- Base salary from $72,447 to $76,736 per annum, HWF2

- Remuneration up to $87,553 + benefits

- 4 to 6 weeks annual leave per year with 14% to 17.5% leave loading
