Hornsby Council invites you to apply for the Biodiversity Planning and Assessment role and join the Environment Branch team.

About the Role

Join a passionate and collaborative team dedicated to protecting and enhancing biodiversity in the Hornsby Shire. In this role, you’ll apply your expertise in biodiversity conservation planning and environmental management to make a meaningful impact on the local environment. You’ll play a key role in shaping and delivering strategies, plans, grants, and projects that support the conservation of our unique natural landscapes. Whether you’re just starting your career or bringing years of experience, this position offers a rewarding prospect to grow and contribute to sustainable environmental outcomes.

Position Requirements

Grade 7 – Emerging Environmental Professional

Ideal for candidates nearing completion of a degree in environmental science, ecology, or natural resource management. You’ll bring foundational knowledge of biodiversity and environmental legislation, strong analytical and communication skills, and a collaborative mindset.

Grade 8 – Early-Career Environmental Specialist

Requires a completed degree and some relevant experience. You’ll have a solid understanding of biodiversity principles,



planning frameworks, and environmental regulations, along with demonstrated fieldwork capabilities and the ability to work both independently and in a team.

Grade 9 – Experienced Environmental Planner

Suited for professionals with a science degree and substantial experience in biodiversity planning and environmental assessment, preferably within local government. You’ll possess advanced knowledge of environmental legislation, strong field survey and design skills, and the ability to lead complex projects.

About You

- A seasoned professional with deep expertise in biodiversity planning and environmental assessment
- A motivated and qualified early‑career candidate eager to learn and grow in the role

You’ll need to be self‑motivated, organised, and capable of managing your time effectively. Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making skills are essential, especially when navigating complex environmental issues and applying state and federal legislation in local planning contexts.

You Should Also Have

- Excellent technical and computer skills, particularly in flora and fauna identification and management




- The ability to work confidently in bushland environments and with community
- A collaborative approach and a genuine passion for environmental conservation

Compensation

The Role Is Graded (7‑9) Based On Applicant Qualifications. $75,500 to $101,459 per annum (based on 70 hours per fortnight), plus superannuation and a 9 day fortnight. Appointed salary in this range will be based on skills, qualifications and experience.
