Sunbury Downs College is a vibrant Year 7 to 12 co‑educational secondary college situated in the semi‑rural of Sunbury. It is a growing school with approximately 800 students. The College offers a rich educational experience in an environment with excellent educational outcomes, high expectations and strong student management.
The College regards itself as an academic school with a wide range of programs, with a solid emphasis on core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Physical Education; complemented by programs in the Arts/Technology, Performing Arts, Health and Languages (Italian). The school also offers a range of VCE subjects, including VETiS studies and a structured, rigorous VCE Vocational Major programme in Years 11‑12. The College offers an Accelerated Curriculum and Enrichment (ACE) programme, extending students through a challenging curriculum including early commencement of VCE. The ACE programme is a selective entry course with enrolment from feeder primary schools for students in Years 7‑9. The College also offers a Scholars programme for students in Years 10 and 11 and is an accredited International Student Programme provider.
Sunbury Downs College provides a wide range of inclusive activities and programs for Years 7‑12, including Maths Club, Drama Club, Choir, House and Sports programmes, whole‑school carnivals for Athletics and Swimming, specialised camps and excursions, a Student Voice and Captaincy team, and instrumental music tuition. The College also produces a highly acclaimed Musical Production, fostering participation, responsibility and teamwork beyond the classroom.

Selection Criteria
- SC1: Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including the ability to incorporate literacy and numeracy skills, and experience responding to student learning needs.
- SC2: Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing high‑impact teaching strategies, guided by how students learn, and evaluating the impact of learning and teaching programmes on student growth.
- SC3: Demonstrated experience in monitoring and assessing student learning, using data to inform teaching practice, and providing feedback on student growth and achievement to students and parents.
- SC4:
Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, and experience establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader school community to support learning, agency, wellbeing and engagement.
- SC5: Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values, reflective practice and engagement in professional learning to continually improve teaching quality.
Role
The classroom teacher classification comprises two salary ranges – range 1 and range 2. The primary focus is the planning, preparation and teaching of programmes to achieve specific student outcomes, with critical reflection and inquiry to improve knowledge, skills and engagement.
As experience grows, classroom teachers may be required to undertake additional duties appropriate to their range, qualifications, training and experience.
Range 2 classroom teachers play a significant role in improving student performance and educational outcomes, contributing to school policy and priority implementation, and enhancing staff knowledge of student learning and high‑quality instruction.
- Provide content knowledge and pedagogical practice to meet diverse student needs.
- Model exemplary classroom practice and mentor/coach other teachers in reflective practice development.
- Offer expert advice on content, processes and strategies shaping professional learning.
- Supervise and train one or more student teachers.
- Assist staff in using student data to inform teaching approaches that meet targets for improved learning outcomes.
Range 1 classroom teachers focus on further developing skills and competencies to become effective practitioners with structured support, planning, preparation and teaching to achieve specific outcomes. They operate under general direction, support policy development, and may supervise student teachers.
Responsibilities
- Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of a curriculum area or other curriculum programme.
- Undertake other classroom‑teaching related and organisational duties as determined by the School Principal.
- Participate in parent‑teacher meetings, staff meetings, camps and excursions.
- Undertake other non‑teaching supervisory duties.
Who May Apply
Teachers registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach, or with demonstrated experience in the specified curriculum area.

Qualification Requirements
To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class:
- Provisional or full registration approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
- Those who completed an Australian postgraduate level initial teaching program or course of study on or after 1 January 2024 must demonstrate completion of a postgraduate level accredited initial teacher education programme approved by an Australian State or Territory Teacher Regulatory Authority and satisfying the standards of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership.
- Persons who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program after 1 July 2016 must also demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements unless LANTITE is part of the program completed.
