About SMLS
Established in 1973, South-East Monash Legal Service (SMLS) is a community legal centre that provides free legal assistance to people in Southeast Melbourne. SMLS provides legal information, advice and case work including representation for people experiencing disadvantage on a range of legal matters, such as family law and family violence, employment law, debt and fines, civil litigation, wills, power of attorney, and tenancy.

Position Purpose
The Payroll Officer ensures timely and accurate processing of employee pay, benefits, and employment changes under the guidance of the Senior Manager of Finance and HR Manager. This role handles payroll data, employee records, contracts, and reporting, while providing payroll support to staff and contributing to ongoing process improvements for SMLS.
Position Responsibilities
- Process new contracts or contract variations, payroll onboarding and offboarding for starters and leavers, and update payroll records accordingly.
- Ensure accurate entry of employee data including bank and tax details, superannuation, and union subscriptions.
- Handle statutory payments such as paid and unpaid parental leave, annual leave, sick leave, and long service leave calculations, ensuring SCHADS Award and EBA compliance as applicable.
- Collect and verify employee timesheets, work hours, and leave applications.
- Process payroll timely, including calculating compensation, overtime, allowances, and salary adjustments using relevant HR and payroll software (e.g. Reckon, MS 365, Excel, HR Partner).
- Deduct PAYG tax, record superannuation, and other statutory contributions in accordance with Australian law.
- Liaise with HR, site administration, management, and external parties to resolve employee payroll queries and provide excellent stakeholder service.
