Started by a group of dedicated female legal practitioners, who were providing free advice to women in need, Central Australian Women’s Legal Service (CAWLS) was formed in the early 1990s and soon grew to a full-time legal service. Now funded by both the Federal and Territory Governments, they deliver a range of holistic, culturally safe,
and trauma-informed services across the Central Australia and Barkly regions, including legal assistance/advice and other, specialised support services for those affected by domestic violence.
The CAWLS team is committed to creating a bright and safe future for all women and children, helping them to live free from all forms of violence and abuse. Their vision is to enable, educate, and empower women to better engage in the legal system, so their rights are considered and respected, and in doing so further assist the community to achieve social justice health.
About the Opportunity
Due to recently received funding, CAWLS is looking for a Financial Counsellor to join their team in Alice Springs on a full-time basis.
Reporting to the Practice Manager, you will be providing holistic, client-focused and confidential financial counselling to CAWLS clients, with a particular focus on women experiencing domestic and family violence. A newly created role, you will also be responsible for developing CAWLS' financial counselling services, identifying opportunities to grow the program and helping to set up internal processes and procedures.
Your day to day responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Providing financial counselling advice to CAWLS clients, and women referred from other services;
- Referring clients to other relevant services and community resources, based on a sound knowledge of and relationships with other service providers and governments;
- Building and maintaining strong inter-agency relationships and professional links with other key agencies, community leaders and local people;
- Identifying potential gaps, priorities or emerging needs relevant to money/financial issues, developing and delivering programs or initiatives that respond to these needs;
- Assisting with any obligations or regulations relevant to the CAWLS and its funding agreements, preparing reports and other records as required;
- Collecting relevant data and statistics and assisting the management team to prepare service delivery plans or strategies, as needed; and
- Occasional travel to Tennant Creek and remote communities to provide outreach services, community education and financial counselling advice to the women in these communities.

*PLEASE NOTE: This role cannot be undertaken remotely.
To be successful in this position you will hold or be currently studying a Diploma of Financial Counselling.
An additional qualification in a social work or community services related field would be highly regarded, but is not essential provided you have a strong commitment to the principles of social justice and can demonstrate an understanding of domestic and family violence as it affects women.
A confident and highly empathetic communicator, you will be comfortable giving talks and running workshops, and be able to support and relate to people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Adapting your approach to each individual, you will be capable of explaining complex financial issues in clear, plain language; ensuring it is straightforward and engaging for clients regardless of their financial literacy level.
Driven and genuinely committed to CAWLS vision of a community free from violence and abuse, you will be keen to help build these new financial services from the ground up, identifying any gaps, needs, or priorities and truly helping to shape this role and the wider financial counselling program. Though not essential, a background in program/project development would be beneficial.
Finally, you will be highly flexible, with sound organisational skills and the ability to successfully manage the challenges of remote service delivery. You'll be able to work both autonomously and as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team, and be confident creating and maintaining strong relationships with other service providers or relevant organisations, working together to support your clients and communities.
Please note: You will need a current Australian driver's license, and be willing to obtain national police clearance and a working with children check.
