- Salary - $76,931 pa plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading
- Casual hourly rate - $42.12 plus applicable casual loadings
The Department of Communities and Justice delivers legal, court and supervision services to the people of NSW by managing courts and justice services, implementing programs to reduce crime and re offending, managing custodial and community-based correctional services,
protecting rights and community standards and advising on law reform and legal matters.
The Reporting Services Branch (RSB) is part of Courts, Tribunals and Service Delivery. RSB provides first-class client service by delivering high quality and timely monitoring, reporting and transcription services to the courts and tribunals across NSW.
RSB services include provision of Court Reporters, Sound Reporters, Monitors and essential transcripts delivered in real-time, daily and on request.
RSB promotes the expanded use of technology solutions to support service delivery including multi-court remote monitoring. Our services are utilised to support court and tribunal matters and are used by community members who may participate in proceedings as well as internal and external clients, including lawyers, judiciary, members and other government agencies.
About The Role
As a Sound Reporter (Remote) you are responsible for the monitoring of simultaneous live court proceedings from a remote location over prolonged, uninterrupted periods of time. You will prepare supporting documentation, adhere to style guides and ensure complete accuracy whilst working in high pressure situations.
You will be required to travel, especially in regional areas, to service various court locations. Both regional and metropolitan roles will also be required to work out of several different locations depending on the need to cover courts.
Each day will be different, and you get the opportunity to encounter new and diverse content each day, and you are provided a first-hand view of the court system across NSW system.

You thrive in high pressure situations where maintaining focus on multiple tasks, high attention to detail and accuracy are essential. You possess excellent English vocabulary and literacy skills including, comprehension, spelling and grammar which are essential in the production of accurate running transcripts of court proceedings. Computer literate, your word typing speed is a minimum of 50wpm and you keep up to date with constantly changing technologies, software and hardware.
Your hearing and focus are exceptional, and you can listen and comprehend simultaneous voices and dialogue in a court room setting. Ideally, you have knowledge of courtroom procedures, diverse knowledge and comprehension of medical, technical and legal terminology or you are willing to learn and can quickly research specialist dictionaries.
Reliable and punctual, you are willing to travel to various regional and / or metropolitan locations when requested and troubleshoot technical problems with amplification and remote witness recording equipment as they arise to ensure court proceedings can continue.
You may already have relevant reporting experience and the procedural knowledge required to produce accurate log sheets to enable the highest standard transcript however, you are willing to attend the mandatory, two-week training program in Sydney.
Essential Requirements Of The Role
- Willingness to travel to various locations
- Excellent English, spelling, grammar, punctuation and comprehension skills are essential with high levels of proficiency in audio transcription and word processing (minimum 50 wpm) to produce accurate running transcripts of Court proceedings.
- Ability to listen to and comprehend simultaneous court room voices and dialogue (ie, numerous people speaking at once in different court room contexts) and possess the relevant reporting experience and procedural knowledge to produce accurate log sheets to enable production of the highest standard transcript.
- Diverse knowledge and comprehension of medical, technical and legal terminology and ability to quickly research specialist dictionaries.
- Expertise in various types of recording equipment including amplification and remote witness equipment as well as the relevant expertise to troubleshoot technical equipment problems as they arise.
- Willingness to attend a mandatory two week training program in Sydney
