We are currently looking for a  Principal Hardware Specialties Engineer  to join Thales in  Melbourne, FL.  The Principal Hardware Specialties Engineer is a subject matter expert who is primarily responsible for the electrical design, is to drive the design and development, test and qualification of IFE TV & Connectivity LRU products, to satisfy our customers and meet market demands (competitive in size, weight power, performance, are reliable, maintainable, replaceable, and repairable). He/she is responsible to perform a subset of all the electrical design, development and test engineering activities required for HW solution/product. Participates in co-engineering activity with the HW, SW and System engineering teams.

Activities to be executed within approved work scope, contractual delivery dates and budget. In this capacity he/she will understand the customer’s needs and through life cycle concerns, whatever means are used (e.g. advanced studies, simulations, mock-ups, models, prototypes, etc.), formalizes mission / function description, architectural design and requirements, assembles the solution / product elements in a logical and controlled manner to evaluate the design, behavior, interactions and performance, and confirms that the requirements against which the solution / product has been designed are fulfilled, demonstrates that the solution / product satisfies the overall approved operational needs and that the product data package is ready for release to production and to operation and support.

Works closely with Solution Engineering Manager (SEM), Hardware Engineering Manager (HwEM), procurement, PM and Industrial OPS teams.

Occasionally communicates and interacts with the Customer Programs team to present/address status, progress, risks, opportunities, action plan(s) as necessary.

Key Responsibilities :

The Principal Hardware Specialties Engineer will provide their technical expertise, guidance, oversight and drive the following: 

- Ensures Electrical design HW Engineering activity management within constraints provided by the HwEM

- Responsible for the completion of a set of engineering tasks within the committed cost, schedule, performance and quality. The related tasks may cover part or all the range of activities regarding customer needs, mission, function, architectural design, and life cycle of the hardware solution (requirements and specialty engineering, design, development, integration and verification).

- Ensure that electrical design engineering aspects of projects are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner and will integrate efforts from various functional groups to accomplish goals.

- Provides the technical interface to key subcontractors and customers

- Participates in comprehensive design reviews with engineering team and manufacturing partners to confirm that electrical design parameters, cost and manufacturability requirements have been met.

- Writes the technical specifications, documents to make sure the electrical design meets the customer, manufacturing and system design requirements. Ensures consistency of development activity and deliverables from internal and external resources, including strict adherence to Thales process and procedures.

- Oversees the technical performance of in-site/off-site contractors or independent consultants.

- Domestic and international travel will be required

Required Skills and Experience:

- Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field) is required

- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Electrical embedded hardware design for RF, high speed digital and analog communications systems

- Previous experience in RF amplifiers, satellite communications and antenna designs

- 8+ years of experience in RF design: simulation, analysis, optimization, schematic entry, PCB layout, test / debug, documentation, product release. 

- Previous experience in avionics electrical design, development and documentation.

- Experience with written and oral presentations

- Experience using digital test equipment such as Oscilloscopes, Logic Analyzer, Emulator, Debuggers, etc.

- Experience using schematic capture and layout viewer (ORCAD, Cadence, Mentor Graphics, PCAD, etc.)

- Experience with FPGA/CPLD design concepts.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Master’s Degree preferred

- DO-160 FAA certification experience and FCC certification experience is highly desirable

- Able to Multitask

- Must be self-starter and motivated to work in a fast paced environment.

- Proficient in using Word, Excel, Visio, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office and PowerPoint

- First hand design experience in RF, analog design, antenna design and technologies, design for EMI, and power electronics is a must.

- First hand design experience in industry standard embedded hardware design for Aerospace applications preferred.

- Experience in systems and architectural design: network architectures, multi-access protocols, performance of digital wireless communication and data transmission systems.

- Be able to participate and execute multiple electrical designs.

- Work as the team within internal integrated product development team consisting of Electrical, PCB, Firmware, and mechanical engineers to designs and test complex RF and high-speed embedded hardware.

- Writes the technical specification and design test verification documents to make sure the product meets the design/system/ customer requirements. Prepare the material and make presentations for formal design reviews.

- Identifies and resolves potential problems before they occur, therefore minimizing the impact to schedule and cost.

- Work well in close collaboration with other engineering and non-engineering organizations such as: mechanical engineering, test engineering, system software, system engineering, system integration and validation, operations, product engineering, project management, product line management and work package management.

- Ability to communicate technical issues in an assertive and tactful manner.
