About The Role

With a dual focus on providing technical expertise to support the development of a hybrid locomotive operating system together with improved reliability of onboard control systems,

you will play a critical role in supporting the Rolling Stock maintenance team to limit Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) via the reduction of Locomotive diesel fuel consumption.

Reporting to the Manager Rolling Stock Maintenance on a residential or FIFO roster you will have responsibility across the following:

- Collecting and building the work which ensures that for each project, the best solution is selected and optimised for value and risk

- Generating the detail and documentation which sets projects up for successful execution

- Lead the control systems reliability program of works for the Locomotive fleet.

- Work collaboratively with internal and external teams to achieve technical outcomes.

- Provide coaching and mentoring to the reliability engineering team.

- Supporting the vision, strategy and goals for the Rolling Stock Maintenance team

- Support Health and Safety performance improvement and model excellent field leadership

- Promote and encourage innovative thinking


This role is on offer on a residential 5/2 or FIFO 5/2/4/3 roster based in the coastal town of Port Hedland, Western Australia. Port Hedland is home to our port and rail operations and is the largest regional centre in North West Australia. The 20,000-strong population enjoys well-established education services, entertainment, shopping and medical facilities.

The excellent sporting and leisure facilities include; a new aquatic centre, sports stadium and water play park. Its beaches and mangroves are home to an abundance of fish and other wildlife. Within driving distance are the spectacular Broome, Karratha and Karijini national Park. As this is a residential position you will also be provided with subsidised rental accommodation in addition to power and water subsidies

About You

You will have the innate ability to build meaningful relationships and collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, navigating complexity effectively and presenting data, ideas and outcomes in a clear and concise format.

The Following Skills And Experience Will Also Be Considered

- Mechanical or electrical engineering experience with Diesel Electric propulsion system preferred

- Degree qualified in engineering, science or similar

- Experience working with control systems

- Multi-disciplinary stakeholder engagement

- Research, quantitative studies, hypothesis testing, scientific analysis and interpretation of results

- First principle approach to engineering solutions

- Divergent and convergent thinking skills, applied appropriately

- A passion for safety with proven results

- Evidence and understanding of continuous improvement mindset and methodologies

- A strategic thinker who can navigate tactical solutions to achieve objectives
