The Department is responsible for the design and implementation of the Australian Government's infrastructure, transport and regional development policies and programs, and is the lead agency for communications and the arts. We are at the forefront of the Australian Government’s efforts to connect our communities, secure the nation’s economic future, improve living standards, provide access to high quality communication services and ensure all Australians can enjoy diverse artistic and cultural experiences.

The Infrastructure Investment Division plays a key role in the planning,

management and delivery of major road and rail infrastructure projects funded through the Australian Government’s Infrastructure Investment Program (IIP).

The Division develops policy advice to Government on infrastructure investment, and works closely with agencies in the Australian, state and territory governments on issues such as infrastructure planning, funding and delivery, and financing.

The opportunities we have available

The Infrastructure Investment Division is looking for motivated, high performing Directors to manage a Program team. The sections are responsible for managing the delivery of projects under the Urban Congestion Fund, Roads of Strategic Importance initiative, and the broader Infrastructure Investment Program, such as the WA METRONET project or Victorian commuter carpark upgrades as part of the Australian Government’s 10 year $100 billion investment in transport infrastructure.

You will be responsible for working with state government officials to develop project proposals, report on the progress of projects, generate solutions to problems, ensure the program delivers the Government’s agenda for infrastructure investment, draft communications material, and prepare briefing and other complex advice for Ministerial and Executive consideration. You will also be responsible for the preparation of Senate Estimates and Question Time briefings, actively monitoring project and state program budgets and providing input into Budget and MYEFO processes.

A merit pool may be created for other similar vacancies across the Division for a period of 12 months from advertisement.

What will you do?

Duties include leading a team of staff in the following activities:

- Deliver complex programs, implement major projects and engage in strategic planning for longer term initiatives in conjunction with state/territory and local governments.

- Contribute to the overall strategic direction of the Division and Branch, consistent with the priorities established by the Departmental Executive.

- Provide strong leadership and manage staff and resources effectively to achieve outcomes.

- Develop and maintain productive working relationships with stakeholders including industry organisations, state/ territory and local government officials and officials at other Commonwealth agencies.

- Create and maintain a professional office culture consistent with APS Values.

- Plan and monitor work processes and set performance indicators for your teams.

- Coach and develop the capability and potential of your team, contributing to a culture in which people thrive.

Eligibility requirements

Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

- Citizenship : To be eligible for employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, applicants must be an Australian citizen. Only in exceptional circumstances will the department consider waiving this requirement.

- Health Assessment : The preferred applicant may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the department’s preferred medical provider.

- Security Clearance : The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at a minimum of Baseline Vetting. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances.
