Position Information



Lurnea High School is a comprehensive, co-educational secondary school located in the city of Liverpool. The school serves a diverse community of learners with 84% of students having a language background other than English (LBOTE), 49% represent Arabic backgrounds. There are approximately 700 students including 24 students of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background. The school has a Support Unit of eight classes catering for students with mild and moderate intellectual disordersand, autism and other disorders. The school also has an Intensive English Centre (IEC) catering for the English language learning needs of newly arrived migrant and refugee students (numbering between 85-120).





The school receives equity funding in order to assist economic and social disadvantage. These funds are used to support a range of initiatives to foster improved outcomes for every student. Funds enable the school to implement additional executive, teaching and non–teaching positions, the Year 7 Transition Innovation strategy as well as provide resources to strengthen foundational skills in literacy and numeracy, including oral language improvements, and a range of additional programs and initiatives to promote stronger engagement in school. These funds also support the ongoing professional learning of all staff in pursuit of our individual and collective growth and development.



The provision of rich, accessible, flexible and creative learning experiences lies at the heart of the ways students and staff work and learn at Lurnea High School. We are an inclusive school united by a shared aim for our young people to be active, engaged learners, creative, critical and innovative thinkers and responders, and respectful, responsible, fair, tolerant and understanding citizens. We work in partnership with parents, families and the wider community to extend learning beyond the school gates to ensure that our students are connected to resources and opportunities that promote resilience and inspire lifelong learning.





Selection Criteria



Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria: Capacity to lead and support the development of a diverse and growing team through differentiated professional coaching and mentoring, modelling evidence informed practice in the delivery of curriculum.



Demonstrated willingness to contribute to an executive team and operate at a whole school level to effectively implement the vision for the school as articulated in the school plan and the developing strategic improvement plan.



An awareness and understanding of working in a complex setting inclusive of students from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and experiences, and the capacity to establish effective partnerships with colleagues, parents and the broader community to achieve improved learning outcomes for all students.





General Selection Criteria



1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies





Conditions



An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
