Hillsmeade Primary School is situated in Narre Warren South, 52 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. All 886 children are valued within a supportive and stimulating school environment where each child is encouraged to reach his/her potential.

The school has a medium proportion of students with English as a second language.



The school recently completed their Peer Review and demonstrated how FISO initiatives introduced have caused upward trends in our student growth data for many areas grades 3 – 5 and 5 – 7. Our 2017 – 2020 Strategic Plan was built from recommendations from our 2016 Peer Review. This year our AIP focuses on FISO initiatives of Building Practice and Building Leadership teams. Our strategies have included working as Professional Learning Teams using student data to discuss and share best practice teaching strategies, the introduction of our Hillsmeade Instructional Model as well as working with writing consultant Deb Sukarna.



Our Early Learning Centre caters for 3 to 5 year old children with Kindergarten and Long Day Care. Out of School Hours Care Program provides further community support for our families. Parent participation on school council, as classroom helpers, kindergarten helpers, in curriculum events and fundraising activities, is a vital part of school life.



This school has 75.2 equivalent full time staff including 56 teachers and 27 Education Support staff. Staffing for the Early Learning Centre is included in these figures. The kindergarten teachers are part of a professional learning team and participate in all our classroom teacher professional development and staff meetings. Kindergarten is another year level of the school and fully integrated.

Selection Criteria





SC1: Appropriate Food Handling Certificate at a supervisory level and Working with Children Card.



SC2: High developed communication skills.



SC3: Experience in managing food orders.



SC4: Experience in preparing large quantities of food.



SC5: Ability to work in a team within a kitchen environment.



SC6: Knowledge of appropriate OHS requirements and hygiene standards relevant to managing a school canteen.



SC7: Knowledge of Healthy Eating Guidelines of DEECD and experience on creating healthy menu options for prep-6 children and staff.





Role





Duties:



- Receiving stock

- Check the delivery docket and suppliers invoice against the order placed.

- Check for price increases and update the supplier ordering list, adjust the canteen selling prices accordingly.

- Check the quantity and quality of stock, for example whether refrigerated products are adequately chilled or frozen.

- Ensure that products are intact and not damaged.

- Check use-by dates.

- Put chilled or frozen products away immediately.

- When restocking refrigerators and shelves place the new deliveries at the back to ensure that older stock is used first.

- Regular reporting to the Principal on financial performance of both:

- The overall canteen profit/loss

- Individual performance of product categories, and performance over the year (i.e.: seasonal variations).

- Regular reporting to the Business Manager of stocktakes/assets held for the school ledger.

- Updating and dissemination of the canteen menu



Engagement with the school community for feedback on menu & performance, and incorporating updates in consultation with the Principal





Responsibilities





The person appointed to this position will have responsibility for running the Hillsmeade Primary School canteen. The canteen provides a service at recess and lunch for students and staff. Catering for functions such as school council, committee and other meetings on site, as well as some other events, may also form part of this role.



The Canteen Manager will organise the ordering, preparation, storage, serving, cleaning and accounting requirements of the canteen. They will be required at times to supervise other staff and volunteers.



Other duties may be required as directed by the Principal.



The Canteen Manager is responsible for:



- Ensuring that the canteen provides low cost, filling, healthy and nutritious foods as well as promoting healthy eating habits.

- Ensuring that the day-to-day operational procedures are structured and enforced, and that staff are adequately trained and supervised.

- Ensuring that staff carry out efficient stock management, accounting and financial procedures.

- Ensuring that canteen staff are familiar with and comply with relevant legal requirements regarding food safety and occupational health and safety standards.

- Ordering stock, which includes foods, drinks, packaging, utensils, first aid and cleaning materials.

- Ensuring that the canteen remains financially viable by:

- Ensuring stocktakes occur on a regular basis each year or as required in assisting the Business Manager to prepare trading and profit and loss statements.

- Endeavouring to return higher profits by restricting the number of suppliers and range of stock.

- Minimising the range of stock to assist in reducing slow turnover items, which can lead to spoilage. To ensure efficient ordering with fewer orders needing to be placed.

- When possible use local providers.

- It is important to ensure that when minimising the range of stock in a canteen the range and variety of nutritious foods, such as fruit and vegetables, is not reduced.
