The Australian Research Council is providing a significant amount of funding for the major new Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav, www.ozgrav.org) that commenced operations in early 2017. It is led by Professor Matthew Bailes, an expert in the search for gravitational waves and tests of general relativity using radio pulsars, and its activities also include LIGO and SKA instrumentation, data and astrophysics that span the gravitational-wave and electromagnetic spectrum. OzGrav’s headquarters are hosted at Swinburne University of Technology.



We are seeking a scientist who can contribute to one or both of the following research objectives: 1)

Perform observations of radio pulsars using the SKA pathfinder telescopes and existing facilities to enable the discovery of gravitational waves and test of General Relativity, 2) Undertake searches of these next generation pulsar timing data sets for gravitational waves and interpret the resulting detections or constraints in the context of predictions based on models of the nanohertz-frequency gravitational wave sky.



About you

To be successful in the role, you will have:





- An earned doctoral qualification in gravitational waves, pulsar and neutron star science, computational astrophysics, or a closely-related data science field where advanced computing and statistics were essential

- A sound knowledge of pulsar astronomy

- Demonstrated ability to write high-impact papers

- Advanced knowledge of high-level computing languages (e.g., python, C, C++, cuda) in a Unix environment
