Emerald Secondary College is a single campus, co-educational 7-12 Government school set in the Dandenong Ranges. From the day the doors opened in 1985, the College has continued to deliver an engaging and vibrant education combining both an academic and practical curriculum that encourages students to achieve their personal best. Our College is proud of our Strategic Direction that was launched at the beginning of 2015. This vision will drive the College forward in its core mantra to provide ‘Access to Excellence’ for all its students. The vison has three key identifiable areas: Quality Teaching and Learning, Positive Relationships and Personalised Learning.

The College has high expectations of its staff and students and these include its expectations of a compulsory uniform from year 7-12 enabling students to take pride in themselves and their college, and to nurture a sense of belonging. The staff utilise a consistent lesson structure with learning objectives and provide constructive feedback to each other on their teaching. We offer many opportunities for students beyond the Australian Curriculum including the Year 9 Connect Program, Japanese Sister School Exchange Programs, Instrumental Music program, State level sports teams, School Production and an Outdoor Education Program. At Emerald Secondary College we recognise achievement continuously via the parent portal and each semester, Year Level Award Assemblies are held to recognise and promote academic excellence. Our College has a strong history of academic success with a high proportion of students being accepted into university or other tertiary institutions. We offer an extensive range of VCE courses in the Senior School complemented by vocational education opportunities including VET and VCAL. We are also proud to be able to offer the Select Entry Accelerated Learning Program (SEAL) for academically talented students from Year 7 onwards. To support student learning, we introduced the parent portal “Compass” which enables parents to have 24 hour on line access which has enhanced communication and enabled them to have access to data on their child’s attendance and achievement as well as open communication with the College and classroom teachers. The College has a strong commitment to student Wellbeing. We have an excellent Student Wellbeing Program which includes a large, diverse and highly skilled Counselling team, Peer Support, a Chaplain and Inclusion support. We also access a range of support services from Emerald Centre for Hope and Outreach (ECHO) to assist students fulfil their potential. Students are encouraged to have a voice within our college, and we have an established student representative council that works closely with the students, staff and School Council. Selection Criteria 1. EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP Demonstrated outstanding capacity visionary and exemplary educational leadership of the college, together with highly developed skills in leading and managing change and in the leadership of others in the process of change. 2. FINANCIAL MANAGERIAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE ABILITY Demonstrated outstanding financial, organisational and resource management skills in the context of school operations. 3. PLANNING POLICY AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND REVIEW Demonstrated high level capacity to implement departmental policies and exemplary values appropriate to the development of student learning, together with a demonstrated capacity to achieve high quality student outcomes. Demonstrated understanding of the use of learning technologies in ways that enhance classroom practice and positively impact student learning outcomes. 4. LEADERSHIP OF STAFF AND STUDENTS Demonstrated high level capacity to motivate staff, develop the talents and build an effective team operating in a learning environment which takes account of individual student needs and in which students are scaffolded to develop their special abilities and talents. 5. INTERPERSONAL AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS. Demonstrated highly developed interpersonal communication skills in individual, small group and community contexts together with exemplary values pertaining to personal qualities of objectivity, sensitivity and integrity. A DEMONSTRATED ABILITY AND EXPERIENCE IN LEADING A FISO TEAM FOR WHOLE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT. Role The assistant principal reports directly to the principal. Assistant principals have a primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. In exercising the responsibility, assistant principals will have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staff relating to their area of designated responsibility within the framework of the school's strategic plan, policies and budget. Assistant principals will contribute to the overall management of the school through involvement in policy formulation and decision making. The management of significant school program or functional areas in schools involve assistant principals in the analysis of the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students. Typically assistant principals will be responsible for the effective use of the teaching staff and program budget of a defined area of the school's operation and for the oversight and leadership of the educational programs provided utilising these resources. At Emerald Secondary College, the role and accountabilities of the Assistant Principals are aligned to the AITSL standards and reflect the Education State Framework for Improving Student Outcomes (FISO) and our School’s Strategic Plan. As Principal Class Officers, the Assistant Principals will work collaboratively with the Principal and other leadership staff to develop and implement the school improvement strategies. Assistant Principals are generally responsible for the leadership, management and the learning and welfare of all students. Common roles across each of the Assistant Principal roles include: Providing an environment that supports the effective performance of staff and optimises student learning. Inspiring and leading staff and students in their commitment to the core values of the College. Ensuring a consistent and coordinated approach for the implementation of Government, Department of Education and Training (DET) policies, processes and initiatives and agreed school policies. Leading, supporting and assisting whole school planning and development Supporting the strategic planning and work of the Sub-schools and designated Learning Domains. Contributing to school accountability functions including research, the interpretation of data, the preparation of the School Strategic Plan and associated processes, the Annual Implementation Plan; Annual Reports to the School Community; other reviews and evaluation processes as necessary and/or required. Supporting local school/community activities, networks, organisations and structures which focus on education and related activities of strategic importance to the school. Involvement in the School Council Role modelling a commitment to professional growth and lifelong learning. Assistant Principals are also encouraged to have a single teaching allotment of up to 3 periods per week. As a member of the Leadership team, the position will require some involvement in College community activities outside the currently designated school hours and may involve participation in planning times during some school holiday periods. Specifc Responsibilities: Leading and supporting the coordinators and teaching staff within the sub-school to promote a positive climate for learning Lead student management in the sub school which is consistent with school wide policy and process. Support student engagement and wellbeing team within the sub-school to manage attendance, wellbeing, behaviour and student engagement. Visit and develop positive ongoing communications between staff, students, families and the community within the sub school. Support college wide initiatives and support Leading teachers in their portfolios. Work with sub school team to improve and monitor senior school student outcomes including VCE and VCAL outcomes based data.
