An opportunity has come available fora live-in Au-pair/ Disability Carer to help with our 13-year old twins who have special needs. Our twins arrived very early and have Autism and cochlear implants as a result. We therefore need an Au-pair/ Disability Carer who is interested in learning more about children with special needs, who will take a keen interest in participating in their home intervention programs and who is willing to commit longer term.
We will need our Au-pair/ Carer to attend weekly therapy sessions, to learn more about how to use alternative communication and learning strategies (Picture Exchange Communication, Sign Language and Applied BehaviourAnalysis),
play with the children and take them on outings to the park and pool . We will also need you to cook for, clean, help feed and bath the twins,help prepare for their ABA homework after school and sometimes attend some oftheir appointments with us.
During the school-term hours are 6.45am-8am and again 3.00-7.30pm Mon-Fri. During the school holidays you will have the opportunity to work longer hours from Mon-Fri. Weekends you have free but you are welcome to join us for trips to the beach, Sunday lunch and swimming in our pool in summer and just being part of the family.
You will have your own large double room with shared bathroom and a key to come and go as you please. Meals and access to the Internet and Wi-Fi are free.
We are very close to public transport (7 minutewalk), with easy access to Sydney city (30 minutes by train), the beaches (30 minutes by bus) and large shopping centres (15 minutes by train). There is a gym 7 minutes walk from our house. We are also offeringan hourly rate, so that you have the opportunity to earn more money during the school holidays when you work longer hours.
The start date will be 10 June andyou are able to move into the room from Friday 8 June onwards. There will be a 10 day handover period with our current carer, who will also be happy to answer any questions your may have during the application process.
We also have a weekend Au-pair living with us, who is very friendly and who is around for company and can also help you if you are unsure in the beginning after the hand-over period. I work from home as a clinical psychologist and my husband works is an IT consultant. We have a Labrador dog and a cat that are very friendly and welcoming.
The position will suit someonethat is interested in learning more about Autism, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Picture Exchange Communication (PECS) and Australian Sign Language and who is interested in Psychology. We will help you to get all the experience you need to work with our special children and support you if you are interested in getting certifications in these areas. We will also provide you with all the training and support that you need until you feel confident to work on your own . Previous experience is not necessary. We would like to have someone in the position for at least 10 months, but preferably 1 year.
