Job Description: Senior Electrical Designer (3D Modelling)

The Senior Electrical Designer (3D Modeller) plays a critical role in translating complex conceptual designs into high-quality, constructible 3D models and detailed engineering drawings. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will design heavy industrial electrical infrastructure, power systems, and instrumentation layouts for large-scale global projects.

Key Responsibilities

- 3D Modelling & Asset Design: Develop accurate, interference-free 3D models of electrical and instrumentation systems including cable trays, substations, switchrooms, lighting, and earthing networks.
- Drawing Deliverables: Generate detailed engineering deliverables such as general arrangements, layout drawings, cable routing diagrams, single-line diagrams (SLDs), termination schedules, and schematic diagrams.
- Design Coordination: Collaborate closely with structural, mechanical, and piping designers to resolve 3D model clashes and ensure a seamless, integrated design.
- Compliance & Quality Assurance: Ensure all designs comply with relevant engineering standards (e.g., Australian Standards), safety regulations, and project-specific client specifications.
- Design Reviews: Participate in and lead model reviews with internal engineering teams and external project stakeholders.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance, technical support, and drafting checks for junior and intermediate designer team members.

Technical Skills & Qualifications

- Education: Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Associate Degree, or equivalent technical qualification/trade background.
- 3D Software Expertise: Advanced proficiency in MicroStation 3D or AutoCAD 3D is highly essential.

Experience with OpenBuildings, ProStructures, or Smart 3D is a distinct advantage.
- Industry Experience: Minimum of 5–8+ years of design experience within the heavy industrial sector, specifically focusing on mining, mineral processing, or materials handling projects.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of industrial plant layouts, electrical equipment positioning, cable management design, and vendor data extraction.
- Standards Awareness: Working knowledge of regional electrical standards (such as AS/NZS 3000) and industrial safety standards.

Soft Skills & Attributes

- Strong spatial awareness and a sharp eye for design detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate design concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- A collaborative mindset with the ability to manage competing priorities under tight project deadlines.

Our client is a growing Perth engineering firm offering design, supply and turnkey solutions to the mining, mineral processing, refining, manufacturing and energy sectors. Their work includes switch rooms, battery energy storage, and environmental systems such as baghouses, scrubbers and thermal oxidisers. They’re agile and practical, and they care about getting things built properly, so there’s none of the bureaucracy of a Tier 1 firm.

About the Role

As Lead Electrical Engineer, you’ll head the electrical discipline, reporting directly to the Managing Director and leading a team of 4–5 engineers. This is a hands‑on leadership role for someone who knows how electrical systems go together on paper and in the field. You’ll own electrical delivery across bids and projects, from first concept through to commissioning.

What You’ll Be Doing

- Leading, mentoring and reviewing the work of a team of electrical engineers
- Owning electrical design from concept and detailed design through construction and commissioning, on greenfield and brownfield sites
- Designing and specifying switchboards, MCCs and power distribution systems
- Carrying out and overseeing power systems analysis: load flow, fault level, protection coordination and arc flash studies
- Signing off key engineering deliverables, including single line diagrams, schematics, cable schedules, specifications and datasheets
- Providing technical and commercial input to tenders and project schedules
- Working with process, mechanical, structural and controls engineers to deliver integrated solutions
- Improving the company’s design standards, templates and calculation tools
- Promoting a strong safety and quality culture within the company’s integrated management system

What You’ll Bring

- Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Substantial experience delivering electrical design in mining, resources, process or heavy industry
- Hands‑on experience with switchboard and MCC design, build and commissioning
- Solid power systems analysis skills, using software such as ETAP, SKM or Powe
