Product Quality Engineering Lead - Defence Software & Systems
- Hendon, SA (On-site focus)
- Full Time
- $135K – $175K + Super (Base salary commensurate with experience)
The Opportunity
Working within a leading sovereign Australian defence software and systems engineering company, we are seeking a Product Quality Engineering Lead.
Embedded directly within the product leadership team, you will shape and drive the quality strategy for major defence capability deliveries—turning engineering intent into executable verification, repeatable automated checks, and trustworthy evidence.
This role offers an ideal balance of strategic leadership, cross-discipline influence, and hands-on technical involvement across APIs, integration environments, and simulation.
Key Responsibilities
- Verification Strategy: Shape a risk-based verification approach across software, interfaces, integration, system behaviour and non-functional quality.
- Automation & Execution: Prioritize API-, interface-, model-, and simulation-first automation within CI pipelines to ensure checks run early and often.
- Digital Verification Thread: Work with Systems Engineers to trace requirements and engineering intent through to executable test cases, configurations and objective evidence.
- Team Leadership: Direct day-to-day work for test, automation and simulation specialists in a collaborative, continuous-learning setting.
- Product Testability: Partner with Architecture, Software, DevSecOps,
Cyber, and UX teams to improve telemetry, architecture and harness design for better system testability.
- Environment & Defect Management: Oversee emulators, harnesses and integration environments, while leading defect root-cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
About You
- Leadership Track Record: Proven experience leading verification, test engineering, or test automation on complex, software-intensive projects.
- Technical Depth: Practical capability with automation frameworks, APIs, interfaces, CI pipelines, simulation/emulation, and failure diagnosis.
- Systems Thinking: Ability to reason from top-level requirements down to test design, objective evidence, and operational risk.
- Pragmatic Judgment: Ability to combine automated execution, exploratory testing, and physical trials based on evidentiary value.
- Clearance Eligibility: Australian Citizenship is mandatory (ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Government Security Clearance is essential).
Highly Regarded
- Prior experience in Defence, aerospace, rail, medical, industrial, or regulated, high-reliability domains.
