Bring dental care to the communities that need it most.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Tasmania delivers healthcare to rural and remote communities across Lutruwita/Tasmania through our aeromedical, primary health and outreach programs.
Our dental program provides care to communities that often face significant barriers to accessing dental treatment, with services delivered from fixed clinics and mobile dental vans travelling to schools and remote communities across Tasmania.
We are seeking a qualified Dental Assistant to join our close-knit and supportive dental team based in Launceston.
The role
This is not your standard dental assistant role.
Our Dental Assistants are an integral part of a highly collaborative outreach team delivering care across some of Tasmania's most scenic and unique locations, including island and remote communities.
You will work across:
Fixed clinics –
7 fixed clinic sites across regional Tasmania
Mobile dental vans –
2 vans visiting schools and remote communities
A varied role –
a mix of clinical assisting, patient care, travel and team collaboration
Many of our sites are single-chair clinics, so you will work closely in a small team alongside one clinician.
Your responsibilities will include:
Assisting clinicians across fixed and mobile clinics
Working independently alongside a single clinician in remote and regional clinic settings
Supporting infection prevention and sterilisation processes
Helping coordinate stock, equipment and clinic setup
Assisting with administration and operational support duties during office-based weeks
Building strong relationships with patients and local communities
Travelling throughout regional and remote Tasmania as part of a rotating roster
The role is
full time
and based at our
Launceston hangar
.
Travel is a core part of the role, with most team members travelling approximately three weeks per month.
Most travel weeks run Monday to Thursday, with Friday half days in Launceston for administration, stock management and team support.
The remaining week each month is typically office-based, supporting the wider dental program through administration, sterilisation coordination, stock management and operational support.
About You
You enjoy variety, autonomy, teamwork and adventure, and you want to be part of a stable and supportive organisation.
You are adaptable, comfortable working closely with one clinician in a small clinic, and motivated by making a meaningful difference in communities with limited access to dental care.
You share our values of Care, Collaboration, Excellence, Innovation and Trust.
Selection Criteria
The ideal candidate will have:
Certificate III in Dental Assisting (or equivalent experience)
Strong knowledge of sterilisation and infection control standards
Excellent teamwork and communication skills
Reliability, flexibility and a positive attitude
Confidence working in changing environments
The ability to travel and stay away from home during the week
Desirable
Previous experience in outreach, regional or mobile healthcare settings (highly regarded but not essential)

Competitive remuneration + superannuation
Generous not-for-profit salary packaging – up to $15,900 in general expenses plus $2,650 in meal entertainment, increasing your take-home pay
$100 per night living-away-from-home allowance during travel weeks

Friday half days
A genuinely supportive and team-focused environment
Opportunities to work closely with experienced clinicians across a variety of settings

Unique experiences working in rural, remote and island communities
The opportunity to work with Australia's Most Trusted Charity (Reader's Digest Trusted Brand Awards ****)
