Youth Development Officer — South Mackay
A shift with us might mean getting a young person to school, helping another cook dinner for the house, sorting out a footy registration, and talking someone down when the day goes sideways. Then a sleepover, and breakfast before school.
That’s the job. It’s demanding, it’s rarely the same twice, and it matters.
About us
Genuine Outcomes provides residential out-of-home care in Mackay. We’re a small team working to HSQF standards, and we’re opening a new residence soon, so we’re hiring casual Youth Development Officers now.
To us, a residence is a home, not a holding pattern. We put real effort into getting young people involved in their community, following their interests and building connections outside the house. That’s where independence and confidence come from.
What you’ll do
- Keep young people safe and help them work out what they’re good at
- Build real relationships and be someone they can count on
- Teach everyday skills like cooking, budgeting and personal care
- Run activities and life skills sessions
- Work with the Youth Development Coordinator to deliver care plans
- Handle crises calmly, with de-escalation skills and sound judgement
- Keep case notes accurate and current
What we offer
- Casual employment under the SCHADS Award
- No paperwork. Everything we do is digital, admin takes minutes not hours
- No office politics. Were a small team that backs each other, with management you can actually reach, who communicate clearly and back you when it gets hard
- A real career path.
Every Youth Development Coordinator role is filled by promoting one of our YDOs.
- First pick of shifts and roles as the new residence opens
What it asks of you
- A rotating roster covering days, weekends and sleepovers
- Calm under pressure, and the patience to hold routines together when they’re tested
- Being smoke and vape free on shift. The houses are smoke free. Breaks are taken on site with the young people, so smoking or vaping during a shift isn’t possible. If that’s a dealbreaker, this isn’t the role for you.
You’ll need
- Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention or related, or current enrolment
- Queensland Blue Card, plus a Police Check dated within the last 3 months
- Current First Aid and CPR
- Hope and Healing Certificate
- Positive Behaviour Support Certificate
- Open Queensland driver’s licence
- Experience with trauma-informed care or positive behaviour support is a plus, not essential
New to the sector? If you’re enrolled in your Cert IV and tick the other boxes, apply.
Our commitment
We’re an equal opportunity employer and want a team that reflects the community we serve. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people of all backgrounds, ages, genders and abilities.
We acknowledge the Yuwibara people, Traditional Owners of the land on which we live and work, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
How to apply
Send your CV and a short cover letter covering your availability and any relevant experience. We have shifts available now and are building a pool of candidates for the current residence.
