Established in 1855, the Tavern combines its historic country character with a welcoming dining and entertainment setting. The business is known for serving freshly prepared traditional pub meals, daily specials and quality food to local residents, families and visitors. It also caters for private functions, celebrations and events, providing a varied food service throughout the week.

About the Role

Axedale Tavern is seeking a skilled and reliable Cook to join its kitchen team. The successful applicant will be responsible for preparing and cooking a range of traditional pub meals, maintaining food quality and presentation, and ensuring timely meal service during busy lunch and dinner periods.

Key Responsibilities

- Inspect meat, seafood, vegetables and other food supplies to ensure freshness, quality and suitability for preparation.
- Prepare and cook a variety of traditional pub meals, including steaks, burgers, chicken dishes, fish and chips, schnitzels, salads, pasta and other menu items.
- Prepare ingredients by washing, cutting, trimming, marinating and portioning food according to recipes and kitchen requirements.
- Operate and regulate kitchen equipment, including ovens, grills, stovetops, fryers and other cooking appliances, to achieve consistent cooking results.




- Season and prepare meals using appropriate ingredients, sauces, marinades and seasonings to maintain the required flavour and quality.
- Portion and plate meals according to the Tavern's presentation standards, adding suitable sauces, gravies, sides and garnishes.
- Prepare daily specials and assist with food preparation for functions, private events and catering requirements.
- Accommodate customer dietary requirements and special meal requests, including vegetarian and other suitable dietary options.
- Monitor cooking times and coordinate food preparation to ensure orders are completed accurately and promptly during lunch and dinner service.
- Store raw and prepared food in appropriate temperature-controlled facilities, ensuring proper food handling and preservation.
- Assist with monitoring kitchen supplies, estimating ingredient requirements and minimising food wastage.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in food preparation areas, equipment and utensils in accordance with food safety requirements.

Qualifications

- Certificate III or IV in Commercial Cookery (preferred but not mandatory).

Skills and Experience

- Minimum 1 year experience working as a Cook in a pub, restaurant or similar hospitality kitchen.
- Knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, portion control and food presentation.
- Ability to prepare a range of traditional pub meals and work efficiently during busy service periods.
- Understanding of food safety, hygiene and proper food storage practices.
- Good time management, communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a kitchen team.
