Experienced Disability Support Worker – Complex Autism and Behaviour Support
Active Assist | [Craigieburn, Epping, South Morang] | [Casual Employment] | [Pay rate: $36.81-$40.97]
We are recruiting experienced Disability Support Workers to join a small, consistent team supporting a young person with autism and complex behavioural, communication, sensory and daily-living support needs.
This role requires demonstrated experience supporting complex behaviours—not only general autism support experience. The successful applicants will be calm, observant and reliable, and able to follow established support strategies consistently while protecting the participant’s safety, dignity and choice.
About the role The role may involve:
- Implementing a comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan.
- Recognising early warning signs and using proactive strategies to support emotional regulation.
- Managing significant absconding risks and limited safety awareness, including near roads and in busy community settings.
- Supporting safe vehicle travel in accordance with the participant’s individual transport procedures.
- Providing hands-on assistance with toileting, hygiene, showering and dressing.
- Working effectively as part of a two-worker support team where required.
- Completing accurate incident reports and behaviour observations.
- Communicating professionally with the family, supervisors and relevant practitioners.
Any behaviour support or restrictive practices must be undertaken where applicable and under the supervision of the assigned Health Practitioner, in accordance with the participant’s current plans, applicable authorisations and legal requirements.
About you
We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate:
- Direct experience supporting people with complex behaviours.
- Practical experience implementing Behaviour Support Plans.
- An understanding of positive behaviour support and proactive de-escalation.
- Experience managing absconding and community-safety risks.
- Experience supporting people with intensive personal-care needs.
- The ability to remain calm and follow agreed procedures during escalation.
- Strong observation, documentation and communication skills.
- Reliability and the ability to build trust through consistent support.
- A willingness to undertake participant-specific training and seek guidance when circumstances exceed your training or the agreed support plan.
Relevant disability, community-services or related qualifications are desirable. Applicants should provide details of their relevant qualifications, training and current worker-screening requirements.
Shift availability
We’re seeking workers available for:
- School days: 3:30 pm–6:30 pm (three-hour shifts) with possible extension.
- Some weekends: times to be confirmed.
- School holidays: additional shifts, with times and hours to be confirmed.
Please include your availability across these periods in your application. Consistent availability is important to help build a familiar, reliable support team. Introduction and training The intended introduction process includes participant-specific training, introductions and paid shadow shifts with established workers.
Progression to rostered shifts will depend on demonstrated readiness and the agreed safety and support arrangements.
