Management Accountant
Sydney or Melbourne | Full-time, permanent
Ready to build on your accounting experience and get closer to the operational side of a business?
AE Smith is looking for an up-and-coming Management Accountant who wants to understand what sits behind the numbers, build relationships with operational teams and develop their business partnering skills.
You might already be a Management Accountant looking for broader exposure, or a Junior Management Accountant ready to step up after gaining solid experience in month-end reporting and analysis.
Build your career with AE Smith
With more than 120 years of history, AE Smith delivers mechanical and electrical services, maintenance and projects across Australia. Since returning to private ownership, we’ve been building on that heritage with a hands-on leadership team, a flat structure and the opportunity for people to contribute ideas and improve how we work. As our NSW business grows, we’re adding dedicated finance support to help our operational teams understand performance and make informed decisions.
The chance
Reporting to our Finance Manager, you’ll support the NSW business while working as part of our wider finance team.
Around 70% of your role will focus on management accounting and working with operational stakeholders, with the remaining 30% supporting financial accounting and reporting.
You’ll work closely with project managers, Service Delivery Managers and regional leadership to understand contract performance, investigate variances and bring the monthly results together.
Your responsibilities will include
- Preparing monthly management reports and explaining performance against budgets and forecasts.
- Analysing contract revenue, costs and margins, and investigating changes in performance.
- Working with operational managers to gather accurate information and understand what is happening across their contracts.
- Supporting budgets,
forecasts and working capital reporting.
- Identifying emerging issues and helping the team work through solutions.
- Completing month-end journals, accruals, prepayments and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Contributing to improvements in reporting and finance processes.
Who we’re looking for
We’re interested in your accounting foundations, curiosity and potential to grow.
You’ll bring
- A relevant accounting or finance qualification, with CPA or CA studies underway or recently completed.
- Practical month-end experience, including journals, reconciliations and financial reporting.
- Exposure to P&L; reporting and variance analysis, with an interest in developing your budgeting and forecasting skills.
- Strong Excel skills and experience using an ERP system.
- The confidence to ask questions, follow up information and explain numbers to people outside finance.
- A proactive approach and the ability to organise your work around deadlines.
Experience in construction, contracting, maintenance or services would be useful, as would familiarity with SAP. We’re also open to candidates from other industries who can demonstrate relevant skills and a willingness to learn.
Why join us?
- Develop your business partnering skills: Work directly with operational managers and learn how contracts and projects perform.
- Get support as you step up: Learn from an experienced Finance Manager and wider finance team, with existing workbooks and processes to support your start.
- Grow with the business: Build your capability and take on broader responsibilities as your experience develops.
- Make a visible contribution: Join a lean team where your analysis and ideas can help improve business decisions.
The role can be based in Artarmon, Sydney, or Hawthorn East, Melbourne.
Ready to take your next step?
