South Australian Country Fire Service
Job reference: 863592
Location: - VARIOUS -
Job status: Ongoing
Eligibility: Open to Everyone
About the Role:
The South Australian Country Fire Service (SACFS) serves communities through dedicated volunteers delivering professional fire and rescue services to protect life, property and environmental assets in rural and semi-urban South Australia. With over 13,500 volunteers contributing over 3 million hours per annum to ensure the safety of the community, the SACFS vision is to build on their reputation as a trusted, responsive and effective community-based fire and emergency services organisation.
With six Regions across South Australia, opportunities may become available in various locations: Mount Barker, Roseworthy, Murray Bridge, Port Augusta, Naracoorte and Port Lincoln. We welcome applications from experienced personnel who are ready to take on a leadership role in emergency service delivery.
SACFS currently has an opportunity for the immediate appointment of a new Regional Commander to drive the ongoing leadership of ‘Region 2’, which covers 17,000 square kilometres throughout the Upper Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula and Lower North, servicing a total population of around 140,000 people with 2,500 volunteers / 84 brigades. Reporting to the Director, Regional Operations West, your primary accountability will be to ensure the provision of services to protect life and property within the region.
In addition to this role, candidates may be considered for future ongoing fulltime or relieving opportunities as they may arise across South Australia.
The Regional Commander provides strategic and operational leadership across a Region to ensure effective emergency management, resource readiness, and coordinated incident response.
This senior role is pivotal in guiding regional staff, volunteers, brigades, and groups, while promoting a strong culture of collaboration, accountability, and service to the community.
The position involves identifying regional service delivery needs, developing practical and responsive plans, and ensuring the effective management and deployment of personnel and resources. Solid, collaborative relationships must be built and maintained with emergency services partners, government agencies, local councils, and community organisations to support coordinated and consistent service delivery.
The Regional Commander oversees regional budgeting, asset management, and the allocation of resources to ensure alignment with organisational objectives and efficient use of public funds. The role also plays a key part in supporting staff through change, driving continuous improvement, and implementing strategic initiatives. A strong focus on safety, professional standards, and performance outcomes is central to the success of this position.
We encourage applications from experienced emergency management professionals, operational leaders from other services and individuals with strong incident management, resource coordination, or strategic planning experience. If you are ready to bring your leadership skills to a high-impact role and support communities in a energetic, frontline environment, this is your opportunity.
SACFS welcomes interest from candidates based outside the regions, including those considering a move to rural or regional South Australia.
Should applicants be successful, they will be advised that they have been recommended onto the talent pool, either as a future fulltime candidate or for relieving opportunities should they arise. The pool will remain active for 12 months and during this time successful applicants may be contacted for an offer of employment in an ongoing fulltime position or a relieving opportunity in any of the said locations.
Successful talent pool candidates are not required to accept any or all offers made, and the SACFS is not obliged to offer them any opportunities.
