The Opportunity

This is a great opportunity to take ownership of robotics and automation within a growing, privately owned Melbourne manufacturing business.

Operating across precision injection moulding and packaging, the business has grown by 60 to 70 per cent in the past twelve months and has bought adjoining land to expand its manufacturing capacity and advanced automation.

With a large fleet of injection moulding machines and an extensive range of six-axis industrial robots, predominantly ABB, the operation offers an excellent technical environment and a substantial pipeline of automation projects.

You’ll join an experienced maintenance and engineering team, with a dedicated focus on robotics, vision systems and automation development.

The Role

Your responsibilities will include:

- Programming ABB six-axis robots, including developing new programs and modifying existing applications
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting robotic systems in a production environment
- Developing and commissioning robot cells for product handling, machine tending and automated packing
- Setting up and training advanced vision inspection systems, including emerging AI-based technology
- Training production operators in the operation of automated equipment
- Working closely with maintenance, production and management to implement automation improvements

Prospect to Take Projects Further

A significant program of automation projects is planned across the manufacturing operation.

For someone with broader technical and project capabilities, there is an opportunity to take complete ownership of individual automation installations, including:

- Robot-cell design and layout
- Specification of end-of-arm tooling and associated equipment
- Coordination of tooling manufacture, fabrication and guarding
- Integration with injection moulding machines and production equipment
- Installation, commissioning and production handover

Candidates with mechanical trade skills, particularly fitting and turning or toolmaking, will be highly regarded. The upper end of the salary range reflects this broader capability.

Your Background

We’re interested in speaking with people who offer:

- Demonstrated hands-on experience programming ABB six-axis robots (RAPID)
- Strong robotic troubleshooting and fault-finding skills
- A mechanical, electrical, mechatronics or engineering background
- Practical experience working with automated manufacturing equipment
- The ability to work independently and take responsibility for technical outcomes

Experience in injection moulding, plastics manufacturing or vision inspection systems would be advantageous. Training in the company's vision technology will be provided.

Your robotics and automation experience may come from any manufacturing industry.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

- A growing Australian-owned manufacturer investing in automation and production capacity
- An established robotic installation with a substantial pipeline of new projects
- Opportunity to develop and implement complete automation solutions
- Direct involvement with an owner who understands robotic programming and integration
- A dedicated technical position with genuine scope for increased responsibility
- Remuneration up to $140,000 + superannuation, reflecting experience and technical capability
