Signalling & Train Control Lead

Shape the future of signalling and digital train control across Australia's rail networks. Location: National – Australia-wide Employment type: Full-time Portfolio: National Technical Coordination

Why ARISO – why now

Australia is entering a new era of rail transformation, with digital signalling, national interoperability and technical harmonisation central to the industry's future. The Australian Rail Industry Standards Organisation (ARISO) is at the forefront of this change, embarking on an ambitious five-year reform program to strengthen national rail safety, productivity and interoperability.

As an industry-owned, not-for-profit organisation, ARISO is expanding its technical capability and evolving into a national technical authority, bringing together specialist expertise, industry leadership and international best practice.

This is an exceptional chance to influence how signalling and train control technologies are standardised, integrated and adopted across Australia's railway.

Your opportunity to make an impact

We are seeking an accomplished Signalling & Train Control Lead to provide authoritative technical leadership in one of the most critical areas of national rail interoperability. Reporting to the Head of Engineering & Interoperability, you will shape the development and harmonisation of national standards covering conventional signalling, European Train Control System (ETCS), European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and emerging digital train control technologies.

You will help establish consistent national technical requirements, support Australia's baseline interpretation of ETCS and influence the safe integration of new technologies with existing railway systems.

Working with senior industry specialists, operators, infrastructure managers, regulators and suppliers, you will translate complex engineering challenges into practical, nationally aligned technical outcomes.

This is an chance to apply your expertise beyond individual projects and make a lasting contribution to Australia's rail future.

What you will shape and deliver

- Lead the research, development and technical authorship of national signalling and train control standards, including Tier 1 mandatory and Tier 2 harmonised standards.

- Shape technical requirements and guidance for conventional signalling, ETCS/ERTMS and digital train control systems.
- Contribute to national system architecture, cybersecurity and radio interface requirements, supporting interoperability across rail networks.
- Apply systems engineering and requirements management principles to resolve complex technical interfaces and integration challenges.
- Lead technical reviews and provide authoritative advice on signalling standards, deviations, compatibility and system safety.
- Influence industry consensus through technical committees and Communities of Practice, resolving complex or contested engineering issues.
- Draw on international standards and developments, including CENELEC and European technical frameworks, to strengthen Australian approaches.
- Support the ongoing review, consolidation and modernisation of ARISO's signalling standards portfolio.

What you'll bring

You are a highly respected signalling or train control engineering specialist with the technical credibility, strategic perspective and industry influence to help shape national standards. You understand the complexities of integrating conventional and digital railway systems and can translate sophisticated engineering concepts into practical requirements that improve safety and interoperability.

You will bring

- A tertiary qualification in electrical, electronic, systems or telecommunications engineering, or equivalent, with Chartered Engineer status or progress towards it strongly preferred.
- Deep technical expertise in conventional railway signalling, ETCS/ERTMS and emerging digital train control and communications technologies.
- Demonstrated experience applying systems engineering principles to complex signalling and train control integration challenges.
- Strong understanding of Australian rail safety requirements,

interoperability frameworks and relevant international standards, including CENELEC.
- Experience developing, reviewing or assuring technical standards, engineering requirements and supporting documentation.
- The ability to influence senior technical stakeholders, lead industry discussions and build consensus on complex engineering matters.
- Excellent analytical, research and communication skills, with the ability to develop clear, technically robust standards and guidance.

Experience contributing to national or international signalling standards, digital train control programs or industry technical committees will be highly regarded.
