Interesting Industry Fact: The contemporary shipping container turns 70 this year. Most only spend 10 to 12 years at sea before they’re retired, and the lucky ones get a second career. Over in Embleton, a crew is giving them that second career. They turn tired steel boxes into self-powered crib rooms, site offices and control rooms for WA’s power and communications industries.

They’ve just won more contracts, so they need another set of hands.

I’m Allan from Itch. If you’re a Trades Assistant who’s sick of holding the same end of the same thing all day, read on.

One box, three trades

No two days look the same here. One day you’re with the carpenters, lining and insulating. The next you’re with the sparkies, pulling cable and helping fit switches, GPOs, lights and solar panels.

Then the boilermakers want steel measured, cut and ground. In between, you’re on the forklift moving material and loading trucks, or laying vinyl. At the end of it you get to stand back and look at an empty box that’s now a working office.

They ask you to think outside the box. Technically, you’ll be working inside it.
