In short: A senior electrical engineering role owning the design of low and medium voltage power distribution for essential-services facilities across Australia and neighbouring markets, from the client’s brief through procurement, factory build and testing to installation and acceptance. A record of leading complex low or medium voltage design, with around 5 years as a guide, required.
D’Arcy Weil is recruiting a Lead Electrical Engineer, Low & Medium Voltage Systems on behalf of an electrical engineering business that designs and delivers power distribution for essential-services facilities. Based in Perth or Brisbane, you will be the senior technical authority on its electrical packages, and your day-to-day work includes:
- Owning the engineering of each package, from schematics and control wiring to equipment lists, data sheets and calculations
- Running and checking the studies behind each design, covering loading, cables, voltage, heat, faults, earthing and protection
- Turning client documents, standards and network operator rules into traceable design outputs
- Checking drawings, calculations and equipment data before anything goes to purchasing or fabrication
- Leading technical discussions with clients, suppliers and fabrication plants, and following the work through factory and site testing to final acceptance
- Reviewing and mentoring graduates and project engineers
Projects cover data centres, utilities, transport, water, mining, health, renewables and storage, industrial sites and defence. They include new builds, existing sites and refurbishments, using switchgear, switchboards, packaged substations, transformers, busway, cabling, protection and control equipment.
The Role
- Design leadership: Own the engineering of each electrical package, from network schematics and control wiring through to equipment lists, data sheets, parts lists and supporting calculations, decide the technical approach and select suitable equipment
- Calculation and analysis:
Carry out and peer-check studies on loading, conductor selection, voltage regulation, thermal derating, fault tolerance, earthing and protection interaction, and apply sound judgement where the brief is silent
- Specification interpretation: Turn client documents, agreed variations, standards and network operator rules into design outputs that can be traced back to their source, and raise queries and actions with interfacing parties
- Document control: Verify drawings, calculations, equipment data and revisions independently before release for purchasing or fabrication
- Vendor and factory liaison: Prepare technical purchasing packages, assess supplier submissions, resolve review comments and lead engineering discussions on complex equipment
- Risk and escalation: Identify assumptions, departures from specification and likely changes early, and flag their effect on safety, compliance, scope, budget, schedule or quality to project and technical leadership
- Testing and close-out: Lead or support test planning, factory and site acceptance, energisation, defect rectification, as-built records and inputs to operations
- Mentoring and improvement: Review the work of graduates and project engineers, advise them on difficult or escalated matters, and build reusable engineering material for the team
