Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) is the peak body representing and supporting Queensland’s independent schooling sector. Established in 1968, ISQ champions parental choice and diversity in education, helping member schools serve their communities through advocacy, professional learning and specialist advice. Its membership brings together distinct educational philosophies, faith traditions and school communities across metropolitan, regional and remote Queensland.
With a negotiated start date in 2027, ISQ seeks a Chief Executive Officer who can bring people together, exercise sound judgement and translate shared priorities into meaningful outcomes for members. Based in South Brisbane and reporting to the Board Chair, the CEO will lead the organisation’s strategic and operational performance, working closely with the Board and executive team to sustain progress and guide its next stage of development.
The appointment offers the opportunity to build on an established strategic direction and shape ISQ’s future contribution. The CEO will lead delivery of the remaining priorities of the 2025–2027 Strategic Plan and work with members, staff and the Board to develop the next strategic cycle. Working with member schools, government and sector partners, the CEO will support the sustainable growth of independent schooling in Queensland, including the building of new schools and expanding educational choice for families and communities. Central to success will be understanding the differing needs of member schools, ensuring services remain relevant and accessible, and strengthening the common purpose that underpins effective sector representation.
As ISQ’s principal advocate and spokesperson,
the CEO will cultivate constructive relationships with State and Federal Government, Oppositions, regulators, media and education partners. Working with Independent Schools Australia, the CEO will contribute a credible Queensland perspective to national discussions while advancing members’ interests in funding, regulation and education policy.
Alongside this external leadership, the CEO will strengthen executive team collaboration, support staff capability and wellbeing, and maintain disciplined oversight of finance, risk and organisational performance. The role encompasses stewardship of a substantial operating budget and government-funded programs, together with participation on relevant boards and representative bodies.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished executive whose influence rests on trust, preparation and an ability to understand different perspectives. They will combine strategic insight with practical delivery, listen carefully to school leaders and draw effectively on the expertise around them. Relevant experience may have been gained in education, a peak body, a skilled association or another complex organisation with significant stakeholder and advocacy responsibilities.
Key Selection Criteria
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Commitment to championing choice and diversity in independent education and sustaining a values-driven culture aligned with Independent Schools Queensland’s purpose.
- An interest in contemporary education and policy, with the capacity to guide services that strengthen member schools’ teaching, learning, governance and student outcomes.
- Proven capacity to develop and deliver organisational strategy, using evidence and member insights to drive innovation, service improvement and long-term sustainability.
- Effective leadership in developing executive and staff capability, strengthening collaboration, accountability and wellbeing within a high-performing professional culture.
- Demonstrated expertise in Board governance, organisational leadership, risk management and financial stewardship, including oversight of substantial government-funded programs.
- Exceptional advocacy, negotiation and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to influence public policy and build trusted relationships with member schools, governments, media and sector partners.
Applications Commencement date is negotiable in 2027.
