Help us create a home away from home for country kids!
Are you a caring, practical and community-minded person (or couple) who enjoys working with young people?
Allison House Student Accommodation is reopening in 2027, and we're looking for the right people to help make our House a warm, welcoming and supportive home for rural and remote students attending high school in Broken Hill.
We would love to hear from a couple who could share the responsibilities of running the House, but we're equally keen to hear from an individual with the right experience, skills and approach.
This is a unique live-in prospect for someone who enjoys country life, values family and community, and wants to make a genuine difference in the lives of young people.
About Allison House
Allison House is a not-for-profit student accommodation facility in Broken Hill, providing a home away from home for students from rural and remote communities who need to live away from their families to access secondary education.
After a period of closure, we're excited to be reopening in 2027, initially welcoming a small group of students.
Our vision is simple: to create a place where country kids feel secure, supported, comfortable and genuinely at home.
We want Allison House to feel more like a family home than a traditional boarding facility — somewhere students can enjoy a home-cooked meal, share stories about their day, receive encouragement with schoolwork, get involved in sport and community activities, and develop the confidence and independence they need as they grow.
About the role
As House Parent/s, you'll be at the heart of daily life at Allison House.
You'll help create a positive, relaxed and well-organised home environment, providing the care, guidance and encouragement that young people need when living away from their families.
Your role will include:
- Building positive, trusting relationships with students and helping them feel settled and at home.
- Supporting students with their daily routines, schoolwork, wellbeing and personal development.
- Preparing meals and creating a welcoming, family-style household.
- Transporting students to school, sport, appointments and extracurricular activities.
- Encouraging students to become involved in the Broken Hill community.
- Maintaining regular communication with families, schools and the Allison House Committee.
- Overseeing the day-to-day running of the House, including household routines, records and coordination of support staff.
This is a live-in position involving student supervision during school terms, including evenings, overnight and weekends, with agreed time off and relief arrangements.
You'll have the support of a committed local committee, additional household assistance and external services for linen and maintenance.
Position commences beginning of February 2027, with a handover and induction period before students arrive.
Who we are looking for
We're looking for someone who is warm, approachable, reliable and genuinely enjoys being around young people.
You don't necessarily need to come from a traditional boarding school background. Experience in education, youth work, residential care, community services, hospitality, property management or raising a family may all bring valuable skills to this role.
Most importantly, we're looking for people who:
- Have a genuine interest in the wellbeing and development of teenagers.
- Can create a caring, safe and welcoming home environment.
- Are practical, organised and comfortable managing a busy household.
- Communicate well with young people, families and other adults.
- Can balance warmth, humour and encouragement with clear expectations and boundaries.
- Are flexible, resourceful and willing to become part of the Allison House community.
Couples are particularly encouraged to apply, with the opportunity to share household, student supervision,
transport and general maintenance responsibilities according to individual strengths and experience.
Applicants will need to meet relevant child-safety screening and employment requirements, including a Working With Children Check and appropriate driver's licence.
What we offer
We recognise the important role our House Parents play and want them to feel supported, valued and comfortable in their home and workplace.
- Attractive salary package.
- Private accommodation: Newly renovated, one-bedroom unit with kitchenette, living area and ensuite.
- Full board, utilities and internet included.
- School holidays free from duties, including five weeks' paid annual leave.
- Two exeat weekends per school term, plus additional relief arrangements.
- Access to an Allison House vehicle for personal use, subject to agreed conditions.
- Training, additional household assistance and ongoing support from a dedicated local committee.
Most importantly, the opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of rural and remote young people.
Why Allison House?
For students from isolated properties and remote communities, moving away from home to attend high school can be a big step.
At Allison House, we want them to have the best of both worlds — access to education, sport, friendships and opportunities in Broken Hill, while still enjoying the familiarity, care and connection of a family-style home.
As we reopen, our House Parents will have a wonderful opportunity to help shape the culture and daily life of Allison House for the next generation of country kids.
If you're looking for a rewarding role where you can make a real difference, we'd love to hear from you.
How to apply
Please submit your resume and a short cover letter telling us a little about yourself (or yourselves), your relevant experience and why this role appeals to you. Couples are encouraged to provide information about both applicants and how they envisage sharing the responsibilities of the role.
