- TK & M Domaille Pty Ltd trading as HAY Tyre and Battery Service
- Location Hay NSW 2711
- Occupation Automotive Electrician | ANZSCO 321111
- Employment Permanent full-time | 38 ordinary hours per week
- Remuneration AUD $80,000 gross base salary per year plus statutory superannuation and applicable additional entitlements
Position purpose
Provide skilled automotive electrical diagnosis, installation, maintenance and repair services. Automotive electrical work is the principal function and will account for the substantial majority of the role. Occasional tyre fitting assistance is secondary and subject to the limits below. Battery testing, charging-system diagnosis and related electrical repairs form part of the automotive electrical function.
Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for the quality and safety of assigned automotive electrical work, working within trade competence, manufacturer instructions and applicable authorisations.
- Assess faults, plan repairs, identify parts and complete authorised work, referring work outside personal competence or certification to management.
- Maintain clear diagnostic findings, job cards, parts records and test results, and explain required work to customers and management.
- Follow workshop safety procedures, including electrical isolation, vehicle lifting, battery handling, manual handling and secure use of tools.
- Provide occasional tyre service assistance only after the employer confirms task competence, training, equipment and any required authorisations. Automotive electrical duties retain priority.
Tasks to be performed
Automotive electrical tasks
- Use multimeters, scan tools and other diagnostic equipment to locate electrical and electronic faults; interpret wiring diagrams, fault codes and service information.
- Remove, dismantle, inspect, repair or replace electrical and electronic assemblies and components, and refit them to manufacturer specifications.
- Test batteries, starting and charging systems; repair or replace defective alternators, generators, starter motors and voltage regulators.
- Repair or replace faulty wiring, connectors, ignition components, fuses, relays, lamps and switches, and rectify poor electrical connections.
- Install and connect approved vehicle electrical equipment and accessories, including lighting, trailer wiring, reversing cameras, UHF radios and low-voltage auxiliary battery systems.
- Check and adjust electronic engine-control settings and timing where relevant to the electrical fault, within training and manufacturer procedures.
- Work on 12-volt and 24-volt vehicle systems, including cars, 4WDs, light commercial vehicles, trucks and relevant agricultural equipment, within demonstrated competence.
- Complete functional and safety checks, record the outcome and confirm the repair has rectified the reported fault.
Occasional tyre fitting tasks
- When reasonably directed and consistent with the principal automotive electrical role, provide occasional assistance with routine tyre services on approved vehicle and wheel types:
- Inspect tyres for wear,
damage and pressure; remove and refit wheels using approved lifting and support equipment.
- Remove and fit tyres, carry out permitted puncture repairs, balance wheels and rotate tyres using equipment for which competence has been confirmed.
- Inflate tyres using approved controls and restraints where required, tighten wheel fasteners to the specified torque and complete final safety checks.
These duties are incidental and peripheral. The employee will not be rostered into a separate tyre fitter position or routinely allocated tyre fitting shifts. The agreed automotive electrician classification and base salary continue during this assistance. The employer will provide any necessary task training, supervision and safe equipment before assigning the work.
This role does not include split-rim or multi-piece wheel servicing, motorcycle tyre work, wheel alignment, or work requiring dismantling of braking or suspension systems. Such work requires separate review of competence, licensing and safe procedures. High-voltage electric or hybrid vehicle work, refrigerant handling and fixed mains electrical work are also outside scope unless separately authorised and appropriately qualified.
Skills required
- Practical diagnostic and repair skills across automotive electrical and electronic systems, including starting, charging, ignition, wiring and accessories.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, use diagnostic equipment, follow manufacturer specifications and verify completed repairs.
- Ability to organise assigned jobs and work independently within trade competence, while cooperating with other workshop staff.
- Clear spoken and written communication sufficient for safety instructions, technical records and explaining repairs to customers.
- Ability to perform the inherent physical requirements safely, using lifting aids, team assistance and reasonable adjustments where appropriate.
- A current driver licence valid for the vehicles driven in NSW, where driving forms part of the duties.
- Willingness to undertake occasional tyre fitting assistance following training and confirmation of competence. Prior tyre fitting and balancing skills are desirable.
Education required
- AUR30320 Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology, an accepted predecessor qualification, or an overseas automotive electrical trade qualification recognised as suitable for the relevant NSW certification requirements.
- Completed relevant apprenticeship or an accepted equivalent trade recognition pathway, with evidence of practical training and competence.
- A current NSW motor vehicle tradesperson certificate in the automotive electrician repair class, or another legally recognised authorisation, before commencing work that requires it.
Overseas qualifications or a migration skills assessment do not by themselves authorise regulated work in NSW.
- A relevant Certificate IV is desirable where it supports the duties. Any higher award classification must be assessed against both the qualifications and the work actually required.
Experience required
- At least three years of relevant paid full-time automotive electrician experience after completing the trade qualification, or equivalent part-time experience. This is the employer's recruitment requirement.
- Demonstrated experience diagnosing faults and repairing automotive wiring, starting and charging systems and electrical accessories.
- Experience with 12-volt and 24-volt systems is desirable, particularly on trucks, 4WDs and agricultural equipment.
- Prior tyre fitting, wheel balancing and puncture repair experience is desirable. Where absent, task training and confirmation of competence are required before tyre duties are assigned.
- Applicants should provide qualifications and employment references showing duties, dates and hours, together with supporting employment evidence when requested.
Salary and employment conditions
The gross base salary is AUD $80,000 per year for 38 ordinary hours per week, equivalent to approximately $40.49 per ordinary hour using 52 weeks per year. Statutory superannuation is additional. Applicable overtime, penalty payments, allowances and annual leave loading will be paid separately from the base salary under the applicable industrial instrument.
The position is expected to be covered by the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award 2020 MA000089, ordinarily R6 for a qualified automotive electrician, subject to confirmation of coverage, any applicable enterprise agreement and the actual duties and qualifications. The classification will be advised in writing and reviewed if required.
Entitlements include four weeks of paid annual leave, paid personal and carer's leave, public holiday entitlements and other applicable National Employment Standards benefits, together with any applicable NSW long service leave. Additional hours must be reasonable and worked and paid in accordance with the applicable industrial instrument. Any Saturday work must be rostered and paid on that basis.
Any other duties directed by the employer must be lawful, reasonable, within the employee's skills and competence, consistent with the principal automotive electrical function, and permitted by applicable licensing and visa conditions.
