Yirara College is seeking a passionate and committed Sports Teacher to join our team and help inspire Indigenous young people through education, sport, leadership and wellbeing.

Located in Alice Springs, Yirara College is a co-educational Secondary Boarding College supporting Indigenous students from remote communities across Central Australia. Our mission is to provide a culturally responsive education that empowers students to thrive academically, socially, physically and emotionally.

About the Role

The Sports Teacher will be responsible for delivering engaging and inclusive sport programs that promote student participation, skill development, healthy lifestyles and personal growth.

Working collaboratively with teaching, boarding and wellbeing teams, the successful applicant will contribute to both curriculum delivery and extra-curricular sporting opportunities while fostering positive relationships with students.

Key Responsibilities

- Deliver high-quality Sport programs aligned to the Australian Curriculum.

- Develop and implement engaging lessons that cater to varying abilities and learning needs.

- Promote student participation, sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership.

- Coordinate and support school sporting events, competitions, carnivals and representative pathways.

- Engage students in health, fitness and wellbeing initiatives.





- Support students to achieve personal and team goals through positive coaching and mentoring.

- Work collaboratively with academic, boarding, and wellbeing staff to support student engagement and attendance.

- Contribute to whole-school activities, camps, excursions and community events as required.

- Maintain accurate assessment, attendance and student progress records.

- Ensure sporting programs are delivered in accordance with safety and risk management requirements.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

- A passion for working with young people and supporting their development.

- Experience teaching Physical Education and Sport within a school workplace.

- The ability to build respectful and positive relationships with Aboriginal students and their families.

- Strong communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.

- A commitment to trauma-informed educational practices.

- The ability to contribute positively to a collaborative team culture.

- Flexibility, initiative and a willingness to actively participate in the broader life of a boarding school community.

Essential Requirements

- Relevant teaching qualifications.





- Current Teacher Registration (or eligibility to obtain registration in the Northern Territory).

- Current Ochre Card (Working with Children Clearance).

- Current National Police Check

- Current First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain.

- Current Driver's Licence.

- The right to work in Australia.

Desirable

- Experience working with Indigenous students and families.

- Coaching qualifications or experience across a range of sports.

- Understanding of the Berry Street Education Model or other trauma-informed frameworks.

- Experience within a boarding, remote or residential educational setting.
