Beacon Legal have partnered with one of Australia’s largest organisations in their search for a Senior Legal Counsel - Competition. They are looking to hire someone ideally at the 7-13+ PQE level, based in Sydney, for a 12-month contract.

We’re seeking a technically strong competition lawyer to join a highly regarded specialist legal team with a significant competition, consumer and regulatory remit. Competition is a priority, with the role spanning ACCC investigations, merger clearances, regulatory matters, enforcement and disputes.

This is a genuinely substantive competition role. You will manage matters autonomously, work directly with senior stakeholders and regulators, and advise across a large and complex Australian business operating in an increasingly active competition law environment.

The team has an excellent reputation and has successfully brought lawyers across from leading competition practices into the business. For someone in private practice, this is a particularly strong opportunity to experience a leading in-house competition function without committing to a permanent move. Equally, it would suit an in-house lawyer with a strong private practice competition foundation, or an experienced career contractor looking for a substantial 12-month assignment.

About the Role

- Advise on complex competition law matters,



including merger clearances, Part IV matters and regulatory developments.
- Manage ACCC investigations, regulatory enquiries, enforcement proceedings and disputes, including litigation.
- Provide commercially focused competition and consumer law advice across a large and complex business.
- Engage directly with regulators, senior stakeholders and external counsel, managing matters autonomously.

What type of person will be successful?

- Admitted as a lawyer in Australia.
- Ideally 7-13+ PQE, although there is flexibility for an exceptional candidate outside this range.
- Strong technical competition law background gained within a well-regarded private practice team and/or in-house.
- Experience with the Competition and Consumer Act.
- Experience dealing with the ACCC, including investigations, merger clearances or regulatory matters.
- Consumer regulatory experience is beneficial, but competition expertise is the priority.
- Commercially minded, bright and comfortable taking ownership of matters independently.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication and influencing skills.
- Comfortable operating in a quick-paced environment with a high volume of complex matters.

The role is Sydney-based with a hybrid working model.
