General Surgeons Australia – Melbourne VIC
General Surgeons Australia (GSA) is looking for an experienced Communications Manager to build, lead and deliver our communications strategy.
This is a new role for someone who thrives at both the strategic and operational level. You’ll advise the CEO and Board, shape our communications strategy and then roll up your sleeves to bring it to life.
If you like building rather than inheriting, this is an opportunity to make a real impact.
The role
Reporting directly to the CEO, you’ll help raise the profile of GSA and Specialist General Surgery across the health sector and broader community.
You’ll:
- Develop and deliver GSA’s communications strategy and annual plan
- Provide strategic communications advice to the CEO and Board
- Build the processes, tools, templates and channels that underpin an effective communications function
- Create engaging content across web, social media, newsletters and other channels
- Develop campaigns for members, policymakers, regulators, media and other stakeholders
- Turn complex policy, advocacy, clinical, training and education issues into clear, compelling communications
- Identify media and profile-building opportunities
- Help evolve the GSA brand and explore new channels including video and podcasts
- Measure and report on communications reach, engagement and impact
About you
You’re a strategic thinker and a hands‑on communicator.
You can confidently advise senior leaders, but you’re equally comfortable writing the copy, developing the campaign, managing the website or getting a communication out of the door.
You’ll bring:
- Solid strategic communications experience
- Outstanding writing, editing and storytelling skills
- Experience delivering campaigns across multiple audiences and channels
- Confidence working with senior executives and organisational leaders
- Strong digital, social media and, ideally, media‑relations capability
- Sound judgement and the ability to simplify complex issues
- A practical, collaborative approach and a genuine willingness to get things done
- Experience in health, advocacy, public policy, professional associations or membership organisations would be highly regarded.
Why GSA?
General Surgeons Australia is a non‑profit, membership‑based organisation supporting and promoting Specialist General Surgery through training, education, research, advocacy and member support.
This role offers something different: the chance to create a communications function from the ground up, influence its direction and see the impact of your work.
If you’re looking for a role where you can think strategically, create practically and build something of lasting value, we’d love to hear from you.
