Smart Scan Skin Cancer Clinic

1. POSITION OVERVIEW

Smart Scan Skin Cancer Clinic is seeking a qualified, caring and organised Practice Nurse to join our medical team. The successful applicant will provide high-quality nursing care while supporting doctors in the diagnosis, treatment and management of skin cancers. The role involves general practice nursing responsibilities, assisting doctors during skin examinations and surgical procedures, maintaining accurate patient records, preparing treatment rooms and ensuring high standards of infection prevention and control. The nurse will work closely with doctors, reception staff and other team members to ensure the efficient operation of the clinic and a positive patient experience.

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Patient Care and General Nursing Duties

• Welcome patients and prepare them for consultations, skin examinations and procedures

. • Provide professional, compassionate and respectful patient care.

• Record relevant patient medical histories, medications and allergies.

• Perform routine nursing observations when required.

• Assist doctors with patient assessments and treatments.

• Provide wound care, dressing changes and postoperative nursing care

. • Remove sutures as directed by the treating doctor and within the nurse’s scope of practice.

• Educate patients regarding wound care, postoperative instructions and skin cancer prevention.

• Maintain patient privacy, confidentiality and dignity at all times.

• Recognise and promptly report any patient concerns or clinical complications to the treating doctor.

Assisting Doctors During Skin Cancer Examinations

• Prepare consultation rooms and equipment before skin examinations.

• Assist doctors during full-body skin cancer checks.

• Act as a clinical scribe during skin examinations, accurately recording findings and observations as dictated by the doctor.

• Assist with documentation of suspicious lesions, lesion locations and recommended follow-up.

• Assist with the operation and preparation of the MoleMax digital skin imaging system as directed.

• Ensure clinical images and examination records are correctly saved to the appropriate patient file.

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic patient records.

• Ensure all documentation is completed in accordance with clinic procedures and the treating doctor’s instructions.

• Assist with patient positioning and preparation during examinations.

C. Assisting Doctors During Surgical Procedures

• Prepare procedure rooms before minor surgical procedures, including skin biopsies, excisions and other skin cancer treatments.

• Prepare sterile instruments, surgical packs, dressings, sutures and other required equipment.

• Assist doctors during surgical procedures using appropriate aseptic techniques.

• Provide procedural assistance,



including instrument handling, maintaining the sterile field and supporting patient comfort.

• Prepare local anaesthetic equipment and medications as directed and within the nurse’s scope of practice.

• Monitor patient wellbeing during and immediately after procedures.

• Assist with haemostasis, wound dressings and postoperative care as appropriate.

• Correctly identify, label and prepare pathology specimens for collection.

• Ensure pathology documentation is completed and specimens are handled according to clinic procedures.

• Provide patients with postoperative wound care instructions as directed by the doctor.

• Assist in the management of clinical emergencies within the nurse’s training and scope of practice.

D. Preparation and Cleaning of Procedure Rooms Before Procedures:

• Ensure procedure rooms are clean, organised and ready for use.

• Prepare all necessary instruments, sterile supplies and equipment.

• Check availability and expiry dates of required consumables.

• Ensure appropriate infection prevention and control measures are in place.

After Procedures:

• Clean and disinfect treatment surfaces, examination couches and reusable equipment.

• Safely dispose of sharps, clinical waste and contaminated materials.

• Handle and transport used instruments safely for cleaning and reprocessing.

• Clean and reprocess reusable instruments in accordance with clinic policies, relevant Australian Standards and manufacturer instructions.

• Prepare procedure rooms for the next patient.
