About Us
We're Wield, an early-stage, venture-backed team building something new in the monetization infrastructure space founded by ex-Canva alumni and based in Surry Hills. We can't tell you exactly what it is yet, but we can tell you what it feels like: a hard, real-world problem, a product people will rely on every day, and a small team where every engineer shapes the foundations. We've raised a significant seed round, we're backed by top-tier US and Australian investors, and we're hiring our first 10 engineers in Sydney.

The Role
You'll design and own the core platform that powers our product: the APIs, the data model, the event pipelines and the infrastructure. There's no legacy monolith to babysit. There is a blank whiteboard, a real problem at global scale, and the expectation that you'll make calls that still look good in three years.
Engineers here are hands-on with product from the start. You’ll work directly with our design partners and the founders, hearing first-hand from the Businesses using what we build, and you’ll have a real say in what gets built and in what order, from the roadmap through to the longer-term vision. The team is small and the problem matters deeply to us, so your judgement carries weight from the first week.
The challenges you'll take on
- Messy, real-world inputs. Data arrives late, out of order, incomplete, duplicated and occasionally wrong. You'll build systems that stay correct anyway.
- Reliability from day one.
People will make real decisions on what we serve. Idempotency, observability and graceful failure aren't nice-to-haves.
- Designing for scale we haven't hit yet. We're expecting to handle sudden increases in traffic/volume, and as such need to make the right things simple now without painting us into a corner later.
- Clean contracts. You'll define the APIs that our frontend, data and ML engineers build on, as well as a rich public API for our customers to integrate with, so clarity matters as much as performance.
- Build for the developer experience. Our product needs to be best in class for developers to integrate with.
Ideal Skills
- 5+ years building and running production backend systems, ideally including time at a startup or on a greenfield product.
- If you're newer in your career but have been doing big things, definitely still apply!
- Strong in at least one backend language (ideally Java) and comfortable with relational databases, queues and cloud infrastructure (AWS).
- You've been on call for something you built, and it made you a better engineer.
- You'd rather ship something incremental that shows value this week than something perfect next quarter.
Bonus Points
- Embeddable or third-party JavaScript (SDKs, web components, iframes, widgets).
- Payments/fintech experience.
- A background in growth and experimentation
What You Get
- Very market-competitive salary for a seed startup
- Meaningful equity
- Real ownership of the product
- Lunch stipend
