About Mates That Matter
Mates That Matter (MTM) is a Sydney social club built around one idea: real friendships between mates, not support-worker-and-client relationships. Most of our mates are neurodivergent or have hidden support needs, and most are highly independent.
We run 10–15+ events a week, every day of the week — from bushwalks and bowling to board games, Magic: The Gathering drafts and our ongoing D&D; campaigns at MTM HQ in Crows Nest. Our groups include the Cockatoos (men), the Echidnas (women) and mixed events, all for adults 18+.
About the role
Your main job is running D&D; at MTM: leading campaigns for tables of mostly new players, and helping some of our mates step up as DMs themselves. Our tables are "MTM friendly" — we don't kill characters off, every player gets a chance to shape the story, and we keep the rules light so newcomers aren't overwhelmed.
The goal of every session isn't a perfect dungeon. It's a table of mates who laughed together, want to come back next week, and know each other a bit better than when they sat down.
Once you're settled at the table, the role grows into two more areas:
- Event hosting — leading our wider events (games nights, outings, activities around Sydney) as an MTM Host.
- 1:1 support — working one-on-one with individual mates, either alongside an event or out in the community, to help them reach their own social goals.
Key responsibilities
Dungeon Mastering (primary)
- Run regular in-person D&D; 5e sessions at MTM HQ, using a virtual tabletop on screen and D&D; Beyond on players' phones.
- Prepare sessions ahead of time, adapting published adventures (currently The Wild Beyond the Witchlight) to suit the table.
- Teach new players the game patiently, including setting up characters and using the D&D; Beyond app.
- Read the table and adjust pacing, so quieter players get spotlight time and no one dominates.
- Keep the game MTM friendly: no character deaths, inclusive content, and clear handling of anything that makes a player uncomfortable.
- Mentor and co-DM with mates who are learning to run games themselves.
- Help look after MTM's gaming kit and support other gaming events, such as board games and Magic: The Gathering drafts.
Event hosting
- Host MTM events across Sydney, keeping groups to our 1:3 staff-to-mate ratio.
- Arrive early to set up and welcome mates, and stay after to pack down.
- Encourage conversation and connection between mates, rather than mates relying on you.
- Follow safety, incident and emergency procedures, and manage any issues calmly on the day.
- Submit attendance and a short report on each mate after every event, within the paid 30-minute post-event window.
1:1 support
- Deliver 1:1 shifts, either at an event (always as an extra staff member, never as that event's Host) or out in the community.
- Support each mate towards their own goals, such as building confidence, independence or social skills.
- Drive mates to and from activities where needed, in line with MTM's transport process.
- Clock in and out in Connecteam and complete post-shift feedback on time.
What you'll need (essential)
- Proven DM experience — at least 12 months running D&D; 5e (or a similar tabletop RPG) for groups of 4 or more, ideally including a full campaign.
- Experience with current players — you've taught the game to beginners and enjoy doing it.
- Comfortable with D&D; Beyond and willing to learn our virtual tabletop setup.
- Strong people skills — patient, warm and able to read a room, including mates who communicate differently or take longer to open up.
- Reliability — you show up on time, prepared, every session. Our mates notice and count on it.
- Clear written English for post-event reports and shift notes.
- A full Australian driver's licence and access to a registered, insured car (needed for 1:1 support).
Nice to have (desirable)
- Experience working or volunteering with neurodivergent adults, or people with hidden support needs.
- A background in disability support, youth work, community services, teaching or hospitality.
- A Certificate III or IV in Individual Support, Disability or a related field.
- Experience running other games: board games, Magic: The Gathering, or other TTRPG systems.
- Experience DMing in-person tables in a public setting, such as a game store or club.
- Lived experience of neurodivergence. We value it, and it's welcome here.
