ML Engineer, Applied LLMs | Sydney | Senior - Staff Level | Top Base + ESOP An early-stage AI company in Sydney is looking for an applied ML engineer to own how positive its AI agents are, and what they cost to run.

The company

It builds AI agents that help engineering teams at hardware companies make sense of the huge volumes of operational data their machines generate. Small senior team, live customers in Australia and overseas, and backing from leading investors.

The role The agents are already in daily use. You’ll decide how improvement is measured, make search and reasoning work over large, unstructured machine data, choose which models to use, and train your own where general ones aren’t good enough.

This is applied work shipped weekly, not research. As an early hire, you’ll shape the role as well as the models.

What you’ll do

- Design evaluations that show whether a change actually helped
- Improve retrieval over large, messy, semi-structured data




- Reduce the cost of running models in production
- Fine-tune or train smaller models where general-purpose ones fall short
- Build datasets from customer usage that make the product sharper over time

What you bring

- 3+ years of applied ML in production
- Hands-on LLM systems experience: evaluation, retrieval and fine-tuning
- Strong production Python
- A product mindset: you’ve worked close to users, and you let data settle arguments

Nice to have

- Models you’ve trained yourself, such as embeddings, fine-tunes or task-specific models
- Time-series, sensor or other machine data
- Experience cutting inference cost at scale
- Public code or open-source work
