About the Role:

The Mechanical Design Lead plays a pivotal role in leading the mechanical design, modular data centre products and projects, including cooling, ventilation, and associated services, ensuring performance, efficiency, and safety. This role is responsible for ensuring that mechanical designs are delivered efficiently, safely, and profitably while aligning with the company's strategic objectives.

The Mechanical Design Lead is also a key driver of cross-functional collaboration between the Head of Engineering, Structural Lead, Electrical Design Lead, Design Coordinator, Project Managers, procurement, quality, factory, and site teams, ensuring seamless coordination, consistent quality, and well-integrated mechanical outcomes from design through commissioning.

Key Responsibilities:

- Mechanical Design Leadership – Lead the mechanical design of modular data centre units, covering cooling, ventilation, hydraulics and fire protection. Establish standardised, effective designs while providing technical direction, mentoring and support to the engineering team.
- Design Assurance & Compliance – Review and approve mechanical calculations, drawings and specifications, ensuring compliance with Australian Standards, NCC and client requirements. Coordinate design reviews, commissioning requirements and independent verification.




- Project Delivery & Resource Management – Manage mechanical design resources and deliverables across multiple projects, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and support estimating, tendering, cost optimisation and manufacturability.
- Safety & Continuous Improvement – Embed safety-in-design principles across fabrication, transport, installation and operations, ensure compliance with relevant legislation and standards, and support audits, investigations and continuous improvement.
- Team Leadership & Development – Lead and develop a high-performing mechanical design team, promoting accountability, safety and performance while supporting staff training, performance reviews and succession planning.
- Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement – Report design progress, risks and performance to the Head of Engineering and coordinate with internal teams, clients, certifiers and suppliers to support integrated project delivery.

About You:

- A combination of relevant qualification and demonstrated industry experience will also be considered.
- Proven experience in a senior mechanical design role within data centres, critical infrastructure, construction, or prefabrication.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical services design and standards (e.g. NCC, AS 1668, AS/NZS 3666, ASHRAE guidelines for data centre cooling), WHS, and QA requirements.
- Proficiency with mechanical design and analysis tools (e.g. Revit MEP, AutoCAD, CFD and load calculation software) and scheduling systems.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent mechanical design, analysis, and problem-solving ability.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Desirable:

- Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering, with chartered or registered engineer status (e.g. CPEng, RPEQ, or equivalent).
- Experience with modular or prefabricated construction processes, or data centre cooling design.
