Mechanical Design Engineer – Trailer Manufacturing & Fabrication

About the Role

Roadwest Transport Equipment & Sales (RWT) is an established Western Australian manufacturer specialising in the design and manufacture of heavy-duty transport equipment, including semi-trailers, side tippers, converter dollies and custom-built transport solutions.

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team. We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer with robust technical design capabilities and practical experience in steel fabrication and manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and develop mechanical components, fabricated structures and heavy transport equipment.

- Produce detailed 3D models, manufacturing drawings, fabrication drawings and assembly drawings using SolidWorks.

- Develop designs that consider the entire manufacturing process, including material selection, laser/plasma cutting, bending, welding and assembly.

- Prepare accurate cutting lists, flat patterns, bending details and fabrication documentation.

- Ensure designs are practical, cost-effective and optimised for manufacturing.

- Work closely with workshop personnel, fabricators, welders and production teams to resolve manufacturing challenges.

- Review and improve existing designs to enhance structural performance, manufacturability and production efficiency.

- Provide technical support throughout the manufacturing and assembly process.

- Ensure designs comply with relevant Australian Standards, Australian Design Rules (ADRs) and engineering requirements.

- Identify opportunities to improve product quality, reduce manufacturing costs and streamline production processes.





Essential Requirements

- Minimum 5 years of proven experience in mechanical design, preferably involving steel structures, heavy equipment or fabricated products.

- Qualification in Mechanical Engineering

- Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks.

- Demonstrated experience across the complete fabrication process, from concept and detailed design through to cutting, bending, welding, fabrication and final assembly.

- Strong practical knowledge of steel fabrication and manufacturing processes, including cutting methods, press brake bending, welding techniques and assembly procedures.

- Ability to design components and structures with consideration for manufacturing capabilities, material utilisation, tolerances and fabrication constraints.

- Experience producing detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings.

- Sound understanding of engineering principles, material properties and structural design.

- Ability to identify and resolve design and manufacturing issues.

- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineering and workshop teams.

- High attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality engineering documentation.

- Previous hands-on experience working in a fabrication or manufacturing workshop.
