Be the support that carries people through the justice system For many Aboriginal people in custody, the hardest part isn’t getting clean. It’s staying connected to culture, community and support when they walk out of the justice system. That’s where you come in.
The Aboriginal Drug & Alcohol Council (ADAC) is looking for an Offender Support Worker to deliver culturally appropriate alcohol and other drug (AOD) counselling & programs and to support Aboriginal people in regional prisons and in the community corrections system.
About the role
You’ll be based in Adelaide, but you won’t be behind a desk. Expect frequent travel to the Riverland and other regional centres, including overnight stays. You’ll work closely with prison and community corrections staff, Aboriginal liaison officers, and our residential rehab team. Your goal is to make sure no one falls through the gaps between custody and recovery.
What you’ll be doing
- Providing one-on-one and group AOD counselling & programs to Aboriginal prisoners and offenders in the community
- Completing AOD assessments, brief interventions and case planning
- Linking clients to ADAC’s residential rehabs and other services for seamless throughcare
- Building robust working relationships with prison personnel, correctional services, families and community
- Keeping accurate records and providing monthly reports on client engagement and outcomes
- Contributing to team meetings, case conferences and continuous quality improvement
What you’ll bring
- Tertiary qualification or Cert IV in AOD, community services or similar
- Experience delivering AOD counselling, casework or group work, ideally with Aboriginal clients or in a custodial or correctional setting
- A deep respect for Aboriginal culture and the ability to work in a culturally safe way
- Confidence working in prison environments and with government agencies
- Strong documentation and reporting skills
- A current driver’s licence, and willingness to travel and stay away from home regularly
- Ability to obtain a National Police Check and Department for Child Protection (DCP) clearance for working with vulnerable people
What’s in it for you
- Meaningful work with real community impact
- Supportive, values-driven Aboriginal community-controlled organisation
- Salary packaging options available
