Hobart

Location: Berriedale, Tasmania

Part-time (0.8 FTE, four days per week), two-year maximum term contract

Base Salary (FTE): $95 - 105K + super. Pro rata for 0.8 FTE

Mona is seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist to join our People and Culture team. The Museum of Old and Current Art (Mona) challenges conventions through its eclectic and provocative collection of art and artifacts, sparking dialogue and redefining the museum experience.

You'll own accurate, timely and compliant payroll across all Mona entities (Moorilla, Moo Brew, DarkLab, Material Institute and Art Processors) for employees across Australia covered by modern awards, annualised salaries and individual contracts. Reporting to the Chief People Officer, you'll work closely with People and Culture and Finance, and be the payroll expert our team learns from.

The Gig:

- Deliver end-to-end payroll for all Mona entities, through to Single Touch Payroll reporting and payment.
- Apply modern awards, the National Employment Standards and employment contracts correctly in payroll, in collaboration with our Senior Business Partner.
- Configure and test pay rules, pay codes and entitlements in our payroll and HRIS system.
- Manage compliance in each jurisdiction, including superannuation and payday super, PAYG withholding, payroll tax, workers compensation and long service leave.
- Partner with Finance on reconciliations, journals, accruals and labour cost reporting.

- Conduct regular payroll audits and process agreed remediation.
- Coach the payroll team and maintain payroll procedures and work instructions.

The You:

- Extensive end-to-end payroll experience with a large, multi-award workforce and a high proportion of casual employees.
- Expert knowledge of Australian payroll legislation and compliance across states and territories.
- Experience configuring and testing pay rules in a payroll system.
- Experience with payroll audits and remediation, including the tax and superannuation treatment of back pay.
- Strong Excel and reconciliation skills.
- A clear communicator who can explain pay outcomes to anyone and enjoys coaching others.
- Qualifications in payroll, accounting or human resources (such as Australian Payroll Association certification) are a plus.

Mona isn't a place in which everyone can thrive. You'll have your core beliefs challenged ('We'll question those things that allow you to lie to yourself'), and you'll need to be able to benefit from chaos ('Mona is a ship afloat on a sea of chance'). If you have the requisite skills, and you seek to change both the art world and yourself, tell us how by applying via https://mona.net.au/connect/employment

Applications will be processed as they are received. If you would like to be considered for this role, please apply now. Applications will close on Sunday 29 November 2026 but will be reviewed and possibly progressed as they are received.
