Quality Engineering Lead
HANDS-ON QE LEADERSHIP | DIGITAL & ENTERPRISE RETAIL
CloudMarc is seeking an experienced, hands-on Quality Engineering (QE) Lead to help a major Australian retailer improve the speed, quality and predictability of delivering complex digital solutions. You will work across web, mobile, APIs, services and third-party platforms, leading better approaches to integrated testing, automation and test data.
This is not a traditional test execution or people-management role. We need a technically credible problem solver who can see the bigger picture, remove delivery bottlenecks, introduce practical improvements and influence multiple teams to achieve measurable outcomes.
The opportunity
- Own and improve the end-to-end QE approach for complex, cross-platform digital initiatives, from early planning through integrated validation.
- Work closely with product, engineering, QEs and external technology partners to identify integration risks, dependencies and delivery blockers early.
- Build repeatable, scalable ways of testing integrated customer journeys rather than reinventing the approach for every release.
- Drive improvements in test cycle time, automation coverage, quality confidence and overall delivery efficiency.
Key responsibilities
- Assess systems, interfaces, data flows, environments and dependencies to design an effective end-to-end test strategy.
- Lead and coordinate quality outcomes across teams, clearly separating effective system-level testing from integration-focused end-to-end testing.
- Identify manual or inefficient testing processes and implement practical improvements with measurable results.
- Design and implement reliable test data creation and management approaches for complex, data-dependent scenarios, including API-driven data setup.
- Build and extend automated checks across web, services and APIs, with a focus on integration, data accuracy and customer-facing outcomes.
- Promote shared automation frameworks, maintainable suites and shift-left techniques such as mocking and service virtualisation.
- Apply risk-based testing principles and improve reporting through business-critical journey coverage, integration risk and meaningful quality indicators.
- Use AI-assisted engineering and QE tools to improve productivity, while ensuring appropriate validation and human judgement.
- Coach and influence QEs and engineering teams, challenge ineffective practices constructively, and escalate blockers with recommended solutions.
Essential skills and experience
- Substantial experience in senior Quality Engineering, Test Automation or QE Lead roles involving complex enterprise platforms and integrations.
- Proven track record of diagnosing root causes of slow or ineffective testing and delivering tangible process or technical improvements.
- Demonstrated leadership of end-to-end testing across multiple applications, teams and technology providers, without necessarily having direct reports.
- Strong practical understanding of REST and GraphQL APIs, service-layer validation, integration points and API gateways or middleware.
- Hands-on test automation using Playwright and TypeScript, or advanced experience in a comparable modern automation stack with the ability to ramp up quickly.
- Experience designing and operationalising test data strategies, including complex dependencies, repeatable setup and automation opportunities.
- Knowledge of risk-based test design, integration testing,
shift-left quality practices and fit-for-purpose test coverage.
- Confidence working directly with developers, product owners, QE specialists and senior stakeholders to influence technical decisions and ways of working.
- Practical, current use of AI tools to support software engineering, test design, automation or quality activities.
- Strong analytical thinking, initiative, communication and ownership, with a preference for solving problems rather than simply reporting them.
Highly regarded experience
- Azure API Management, Kafka, event-driven architectures or other middleware and integration technologies.
- Azure DevOps pipelines, Jira, Xray, Confluence and modern CI/CD quality practices.
- Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Target, Adobe Analytics or other content and personalisation platforms.
- Retail, retail media, advertising technology, digital customer experience or e-commerce environments.
- Validation of tracking events, targeting, content placements or other cross-channel digital behaviours.
- Service virtualisation, mocking, visual regression testing and mobile automation technologies.
- AI coding assistants, agentic QE approaches or Model Context Protocol (MCP) connections to engineering and test tools.
What will make you successful
You combine robust technical capability with curiosity, sound judgement and a bias for action. You can take a complex, poorly understood testing challenge, make it clear, bring people together and implement an approach that is faster, more repeatable and trusted by delivery teams. Your impact will be measured through improvements in quality and delivery outcomes, not the volume of test cases produced.
Interested? If you are a hands-on QE leader who enjoys solving difficult engineering problems and making lasting improvements, we would welcome your application.
