We are recruiting a permanent full-time Shopify Technical Lead to join our friendly and high-performance digital team based at our APAC Brisbane Head Office in Northgate. Our digital team works as an in-house agency, with direct-to-consumer commerce a core growth engine for the business. We have run our Australian and New Zealand storefronts on Shopify Plus for around two years and are now expanding that solution throughout EMEA and APAC.
AI-assisted development is part of how our squad works day to day, and it has more than doubled delivery since we adopted it. You will shape how we use it.
Reporting to the Global IT Software Engineering, this new role will own the technical health and delivery of our Shopify storefronts, setting the engineering standard for the codebase, leading a small squad of developers, and turning our product roadmap into customer-facing features that ship quickly and reliably. A key part of the role is bringing day-to-day development of the storefronts in-house. You will also lead the technical rollout of our ANZ solution across EMEA and APAC, building a platform that is designed to scale.
You'll sit in our Global IT Software Engineering team, leading Shopify engineering for our International business across APAC and EMEA, and working alongside engineering, data and product teams around the world, including North America.
Why this role:
- Own the Shopify codebase and set the engineering standard as development moves in-house.
- Lead a small squad of two Shopify developers, front-end and back-end.
- Run Shopify engineering across our EMEA and APAC stores, with ANZ leading new features that roll out across the network.
- Work AI-first, with modern tooling and room to shape how the team builds.
Key Responsibilities:
Codebase ownership and engineering standards
- Own the Shopify codebase across our Australian, New Zealand, France, UK, Belgium, Italy and South Africa storefronts, including the Shopify theme (Liquid), custom apps and extensions, our Nosto search and collection pages (Preact and TypeScript), and the TypeScript microservices that support them.
- Set and enforce coding standards, repository governance,
code review practice, and a single branching and deployment strategy across the APAC and EMEA stores.
- Maintain technical documentation so the codebase is understood, supportable and not dependent on any one person or vendor.
- Manage technical debt deliberately, balancing new feature delivery with platform stability and performance.
- Keep the codebases secure: control who can access the code and stores, review third-party code and dependencies, and maintain automated checks that block malicious or unsafe code.
Solution design and delivery
- Own solution design and scoping for storefront work, translating roadmap priorities into clear technical approaches, estimates and delivery plans.
- Build customer-facing solutions at pace, using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery without compromising quality.
- Partner with the International Product Manager on sequencing, trade-offs and effort, contributing technical insight to roadmap and budget decisions.
- Advise on the Shopify app ecosystem (for example Nosto) and assess the build, buy or configure options for new capability.
Quality, release and platform performance
- Own QA and release for the storefront, working with the QA team and our automated test suite to ensure every release is tested, documented and reversible.
- Drive site speed, Core Web Vitals, accessibility and SEO technical health.
- Monitor storefront stability and lead resolution of production issues affecting customers or revenue.
Data, AI and integrations
- Understand where storefront data comes from and what it does, so features are designed with the full data flow in mind.
- Scope and hand over any work that touches data, AI services or backend integration to the AI and Data Engineer or IT Applications, with clear requirements.
- Contribute to AI and integration (Boomi) work where it touches the storefront, without owning those systems.
Squad leadership
- Lead, coach and develop the front-end and back-end developers, setting clear priorities and growing their Shopify capability.
- Work within the squad's Agile cadence, contributing actively to ceremonies run by the Scrum Master.
- Work alongside agency partners as the technical counterpart, reviewing agency code, leading the transition of day-to-day development in-house, and engaging the agency for strategy, CRO, larger projects or extra capacity when needed.
Skills and experience:
- 5+ years of hands-on web development, with at least 3 years building and maintaining Shopify or Shopify Plus storefronts.
- Deep expertise in Shopify Plus: Liquid,
Online Store 2.0 themes, Shopify CLI, Storefront and Admin APIs (GraphQL), Checkout Extensibility, Shopify Functions, and the Shopify app and extension model.
- Experience with Shopify B2B and customer-specific experiences: company accounts, customer-specific catalogues and pricing, and logic driven by customer and product metafields.
- Experience running several Shopify stores from a shared codebase.
- Strong JavaScript and TypeScript, including Preact or React with a sound understanding of performance, accessibility and SEO fundamentals.
- Modern front-end tooling: Vite, npm, ESLint, Prettier, Stylelint, CSS Modules and Storybook.
- Automated testing: unit tests (Vitest, Testing Library) and end-to-end browser tests (Playwright), used as a gate before every release.
- Proven ownership of a production codebase: Git workflows, code review, CI/CD (GitHub Actions), environments and release management.
- Experience integrating third-party Shopify apps into a theme, such as search and merchandising, reviews and loyalty, and subscriptions (we use Nosto, Yotpo and Ordergroove).
- Sound security practice for front-end code: managing dependency and supply-chain risk, controlling repository and store access, and handling customer data safely.
- Confident use of AI-assisted development tools in day-to-day engineering, with the judgement to review and own what they produce.
- Experience leading or mentoring developers, including setting standards and reviewing their work.
- Experience working in Agile product teams alongside product managers and agency partners.
