Join a Data Science Hub as an AWS DevOps and platform engineer, moving machine-learning and generative AI solutions from prototype into secure production environments.

The Opportunity

HCM Australia is recruiting an APS6-equivalent Machine Learning Engineer for a Federal Government contract. Despite the title, this is primarily a hands-on AWS DevOps and platform engineering role with a strong machine learning and artificial intelligence focus.

You will design, automate, deploy and support the cloud infrastructure and engineering platforms that underpin machine learning, generative AI, retrieval-augmented generation, decision-support, automation and analytical products. The role bridges development and operations, helping multidisciplinary teams move solutions from proof of concept and pilot stages into secure, scalable and reliable production environments.

What You Will Do

- Design, build and maintain AWS infrastructure for AI, machine learning, software engineering and data science workloads.
- Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, AWS CDK, CloudFormation or equivalent tools.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines covering build, test, security scanning, release and deployment activities.
- Deploy and support APIs, web applications, AI services, machine-learning models and data products.
- Operate containerised workloads using Docker, Kubernetes and preferably Amazon EKS.
- Develop monitoring, logging, alerting and observability capabilities for reliable cloud services.




- Implement cloud security controls, IAM, secrets management and secure deployment practices.
- Support MLOps and LLMOps capabilities for model deployment, evaluation, monitoring and lifecycle management.
- Troubleshoot complex infrastructure, deployment and production issues.
- Create operational runbooks, technical documentation, reusable patterns and engineering standards.

What You Will Bring

- Demonstrated hands-on experience designing, deploying and supporting solutions on AWS.
- Robust Terraform or equivalent Infrastructure as Code capability.
- Production CI/CD engineering and Git-based source control experience.
- Docker and Kubernetes experience, ideally including Amazon EKS.
- Monitoring, logging, observability and complex operational troubleshooting skills.
- Python programming experience.
- Practical knowledge of AWS services such as S3, Lambda, SQS and SNS.
- The ability to work collaboratively with data scientists, AI engineers, software engineers and business stakeholders.

Highly Regarded

- MLOps, LLMOps or production deployment and monitoring of machine-learning models.
- Amazon Bedrock, vector databases,



Bedrock knowledge bases and retrieval-augmented generation solutions.
- Generative AI, document intelligence or AI workflow automation delivery.
- Cloud security controls, IAM, secrets management and compliance automation.
- GitLab experience, together with GitHub exposure for a likely future migration.

Contract Details
Locations: Brisbane, Surry Hills, Deakin, Richmond, Geelong or Adelaide. Melbourne or NSW candidates are preferred.

Working arrangement: Hybrid. The team typically attends the office one day each week, subject to agreement with the line manager and current agency policy.

Contract: Initial 12 months with one 12-month extension option.

Hours: Up to 37.5 hours per week.

Expected commencement: 14 December 2026.

Eligibility: Australian citizenship is mandatory. Candidates must be able to obtain an Australian Government NV1 security clearance. Existing Baseline clearance is expected and current NV1 is strongly regarded.
