Thrust Maritime

Dandenong South

At Thrust Maritime, we design and manufacture complex, purpose-built marine and offshore handling equipment for customers operating in some of the world's most demanding environments.

From launch and recovery systems to advanced winches and subsea handling solutions, our engineering challenges are rarely ordinary. Our work brings together mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and control systems engineering to solve complex, real-world challenges.

As our Managing Director often says, "We do cool stuff." And we do.

We're looking for an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer who enjoys getting into the technical detail, solving challenging problems and seeing their designs come to life.

The opportunity

This is a hands-on senior engineering role with a strong focus on industrial electrical design, power distribution, motor control and the electrical integration of complex machinery and hydraulic systems.

Our projects involve specialised equipment, including hydraulic power units (HPUs), large electric motors, variable frequency drives, industrial control systems and integrated marine and offshore machinery.

You'll work across the full engineering lifecycle, from concept and detailed design through to manufacture, testing, commissioning and delivery, and through to customer support.

You'll collaborate closely with our mechanical and controls engineers, project managers and production team to develop practical, reliable and technically sound solutions.

Importantly, this is an electrical engineering role, not a dedicated instrumentation and controls position. You'll need a sound understanding of PLCs, instrumentation and automation, but your core expertise must be electrical engineering and electrical system design.

What you'll be doing

- Leading electrical engineering and design activities across complex industrial and marine equipment projects.

- Designing electrical power distribution, motor control, protection and associated industrial electrical systems.

- Engineering electrical systems for hydraulic power units, electrically driven machinery and integrated mechanical/hydraulic equipment.

- Selecting and specifying electric motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), soft starters, switchgear and protection equipment.

- Selecting and specifying specialised E&I; componentry, sensors, cabling & accessories, and provide assistance to the procurement team.

- Producing and reviewing single-line diagrams, electrical schematics, wiring and hook-up diagrams, cable schedules, equipment specifications and technical documentation.

- Engaging with E&I; equipment supplier for delivery of electrical switchboards, controls panels, cables and harnesses.

- Performing electrical calculations, including cable sizing, load assessments, fault levels and protection requirements.

- Integrating electrical systems with PLCs, instrumentation, sensors, actuators and hydraulic control systems.

- Working collaboratively with other engineers to ensure effective system integration.

- Supporting design reviews, technical verification, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT) and commissioning, including development of detailed test procedures.

- Providing technical support to procurement, manufacturing, assembly and project delivery.

- Identifying and resolving technical risks while ensuring compliance with relevant standards and project requirements.

- Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to the continuous improvement of our engineering practices.

What we're looking for

Essential:

- Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering.

- Substantial experience in industrial electrical engineering, with demonstrated responsibility for electrical system design.

- Strong experience with three-phase electrical systems, industrial power distribution, motor control and electrical protection.

- Practical knowledge of electric motors, VFDs, motor starters, switchgear and associated industrial equipment.

- Demonstrated ability to produce and review electrical drawings, calculations, specifications and engineering documentation.

- Experience designing or integrating electrical systems for industrial machinery, heavy equipment or complex engineered systems.

- Working knowledge of PLC-based control systems, instrumentation and automation interfaces.

- Sound understanding of applicable Australian and international electrical standards.

- Experience supporting engineering projects through manufacture, testing and commissioning.

- Strong technical judgement, problem-solving skills and the ability to take ownership of engineering deliverables.

- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines.

Highly regarded:

- Experience with hydraulic power units (HPUs),

electro-hydraulic systems or electrically driven hydraulic machinery.

- Background in maritime, offshore, oil and gas, mining equipment, heavy industrial machinery or specialised equipment manufacturing.

- Experience designing electrical systems for high-power motors and complex industrial equipment.

- Familiarity with marine electrical standards, classification society requirements or offshore engineering standards.

- Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or similar electrical design software.

- Exposure to functional safety, safety-related control systems or hazardous-area requirements.

- Experience providing technical guidance or mentoring less experienced engineers.

The person we're looking for

We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys engineering.

Someone who is curious, practical and comfortable tackling complex technical challenges. Someone who understands that a great design needs to do more than work on paper, it needs to be safe, reliable, manufacturable and fit for purpose.

You'll take pride in the quality of your work, enjoy collaborating with other disciplines and be comfortable challenging assumptions and contributing ideas.

As a senior member of the engineering team, you'll bring technical credibility, sound judgement and a willingness to share your knowledge with others.

We value people who take ownership, communicate openly and understand how their engineering decisions affect the broader project and business.

Why join Thrust Maritime?

Interesting engineering: Work on complex, specialised equipment and systems rather than repetitive, off-the-shelf projects.

See your work come to life: Be involved from initial concept and design through to manufacture, testing and commissioning.

Make a genuine contribution: Have the chance to influence technical decisions, improve engineering practices and contribute to the development of our engineering capability.

Work with talented people: Collaborate with experienced engineers, project managers and production specialists who enjoy solving challenging problems.

Be part of our future: Join an Australian engineering business with ambitious plans and opportunities to make a meaningful impact.

Interested?

We do cool stuff. We're looking for people who enjoy working on cool stuff.

If you're an experienced Electrical Engineer who enjoys complex industrial systems, takes pride in practical engineering and wants to see your designs become reality, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply now and tell us about an electrical engineering project you've worked on that you're particularly proud of.
