At the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), we are committed to achieving cutting-edge, ground-breaking health and medical research that fundamentally improves the quality of life for all people.

Provide expert preclinical biomedical imaging support across all stages of research projects, including protocol development, image acquisition, data management, processing and analysis. Based across SAHMRI and the Preclinical, Imaging and Research Laboratories (PIRL), the role supports imaging studies involving small and large animal models, biological specimens and other research applications. Co-funded by SAHMRI and the National Imaging Facility (NIF), the position contributes to the operation of advanced imaging infrastructure, delivers scientific and technical expertise, and collaborates with researchers, industry partners and regulators as part of a national imaging network. Working alongside NIF Scientists, veterinarians, animal technicians and researchers, the role provides project support, technical leadership and high-quality imaging services across both sites.

About the Role

Key responsibilities include:

- Project management of research and commercial projects

- Advising researchers on SAHMRI’s imaging capabilities and how to gain the maximum benefit from the equipment available

- Providing a hands-on scanning service in close collaboration and cooperation with existing SAHMRINIF Scientists in a range of imaging modalities

- Assisting researchers at PIRL and North Terrace

- Help drive the development and uptake of imaging services at North Terrace through exemplary support

- Maintaining close professional links and collaborating with NIF Scientists to optimise the uptake of NIF services and expertise

- Bringing high-level experience and expertise to research teams wishing to generate imaging data

- Assisting in the review and update of procedures and policies

- Adhering to NIF key performance indicators and overseeing the reporting of research activity to NIF Central





- Coordinating or contributing to competitive funding applications, including applications for new instrumentation and ancillary equipment

- Assisting with quality management

- Other duties as directed.

- Providing expert knowledge in imaging technologies to researchers throughout South Australia and beyond

- Collaborating with and assisting staff and researchers using PIRL and SAHMRI North Terrace imaging facilities

- Project management of projects as required

- Assisting with quality management and assurance

- Operation and management of imaging equipment including MRI, CT, fluoroscopy, PET-CT, Cath Lab, micro-CT, optical imaging other novel apparatus (in-house training can be provided)

- Staff and researcher training and development support

- Ensuring imaging facilities are clean, organised and safe to use, including working with the Radiation Safety Officer to ensure radiation safety at PIRL and SAHMRI North Terrace.

- Principal NIF Scientist support of SAHMRI North Terrace preclinical imaging

- Reporting to project managers and scientific committees

- Working with research animals

- As a NIF Scientist, representing the SA node of NIF locally, nationally and internationally, and being a point of contact for researchers and stakeholders accessing the available imaging modalities as required. Networking and collaboration within and outside of NIF

- Prioritising safety at all times

- Participate in the implementation of the Institute’s Work, Health and Safety Management System and related laws, regulations and guidelines

- Ensure that duties are performed in keeping with the principles outlined in SAHMRI’s Vision, Mission and Values and the Code of Conduct Policy

About You





The successful candidate will possess the following key attributes:

- Eligibility to work in South Australia

- Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science, or equivalent

- South Australian Licence to operate ionising imaging apparatus, or eligibility to acquire a South Australian licence

Desirable attributes

- AHPRA registration as a Diagnostic Radiographer or Nuclear Medicine Technologist

- Postgraduate qualification in magnetic resonance imaging, medical radiations, sonography, physics, engineering, or similar

- Experience in MRI

- SA EPA licence to handle sealed and unsealed sources

- Experience in a research environment

Special Requirements

- Some out of hours work may be required.

- Irregular interstate travel may be required.
