Job Overview
The Project Design Manager – SMP is responsible for managing the design development, engineering coordination, and technical governance of Structural, Mechanical, and Piping (SMP) packages for a large-scale utility steam generation plant. This role provides multidisciplinary leadership to ensure that high-pressure steam systems, power piping, heavy structural steel, and mechanical balance of plant (BOP) designs are safe, compliant, constructible, and cost-effective.
Working closely with project management, construction, and commissioning teams, the Design Manager will oversee external engineering consultants, EPC contractors, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The position plays a critical role in managing complex technical interfaces, thermal/static engineering risks, and stringent regulatory compliance from concept design through to as-built handover.
Benefits:
- Opportunity to be pivotal in the delivery of a land mark Renewable Power Project
- Competitive compensation

- Establish technical criteria for high-pressure/high-temperature steam systems, boiler structures, and heavy industrial plant layouts.
- Develop design management strategies specifically tailored to complex steam plant integration, aligning deliverables with project schedule and commercial objectives.
- Coordinate critical engineering interfaces between structural steel frameworks, dynamic mechanical equipment (turbines, pumps), and high-pressure piping networks.
- Maintain engineering integrity across high-hazard steam generation, pressure vessel, and power piping systems
- Act as the principal engineering representative for internal stakeholders, joint venture partners, and external delivery contractors.
You are:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Structural, or Process Engineering from a recognized institution (Eligibility for Chartered Qualified Engineer (CPEng) or NER status with Engineers Australia is highly desirable).
