Learn utility locating | Training and mentoring through to certification

Australian Locating Services | Greater Sydney | Full-time

Love surveying. Ready for something different?

Looking for a change from construction set-out? Keen to add new skills to your toolbox and see where your surveying career could take you?

We’re looking for a surveyor who has a practical foundation, enjoys fieldwork and is keen to learn.

You might be early in your career and looking for more variety, or ready to take your surveying skills in a new direction. At Australian Locating Services, you’ll build on what you already know while learning to investigate, locate and map underground utilities.

We’ll provide the training and mentoring to support you through to utility locating certification.

Broaden your skills. Find your direction.

Utility surveying combines accurate measurement with investigation and problem-solving. You’ll learn to piece together plans, site evidence and locating results, then turn those findings into information that designers and construction teams can use.

Working alongside experienced locators and surveyors, you’ll learn how to:

- Locate underground pipes and cables using electromagnetic equipment and ground penetrating radar (GPR).

- Interpret Before You Dig Australia plans and investigate differences between records and what’s actually on site.

- Survey located and exposed services using GNSS and total stations.

- Understand utility quality levels, recognise limitations and know when more investigation is needed.

- Bring locating and survey information together in drawings, 12d models and clear reports.

- Explain your findings confidently to clients and site teams.

Build towards becoming a more rounded surveyor,

or develop a speciality in utility locating and mapping. You’ll have experienced people around you to help you learn, ask questions and develop your judgement.

What we offer

- Training and mentoring through to utility locating certification.

- Competitive pay that recognises the surveying skills you bring.

- A fully maintained company vehicle.

- Work phone and tablet.

- Modern surveying and locating equipment.

- Varied work across civil, infrastructure, council, development and smaller site projects.

- Support for ongoing professional development.

- Opportunities for overtime and night work.

- A team that shares knowledge and helps each other.

A solid foundation and a willingness to learn

You don’t need utility locating experience to apply. We’re interested in your surveying skills, attitude and potential.

You’ll bring:

- A surveying qualification and practical field experience you can build on.

- Familiarity with total stations, GNSS/GPS equipment and accurate field records.

- Curiosity and a practical approach to solving problems.

- A willingness to ask questions, take feedback and keep improving.

- Pride in doing a job properly and working safely.

- Good communication and the ability to work with different people.

- A Construction White Card and current manual driver’s licence.

Experience with Neo, 12d or AutoCAD would be useful.

The role is based around Greater Sydney, with work also across the Central Coast, Newcastle and Wollongong. Some night work and regional travel will be required, with notice.
